If people are interested in bike engined cars, there are several hundred teams of students who build and race cars in an international competition. The standard is very high. It started out as an american competition, but UK teams started to get involved about 4-5 years ago, and have done pretty well.

Among the better UK teams (when I was involved) were Uni of Brum and Leeds Uni. Good US teams include:
Akron, Cornell, UTA (Texas Arlington), Michigan Tech
