BTCC 2019 silly season
Discussion
Earlier this year BTC posted a picture of the inside of an FK2 in the build stage so unless they were trying to put everyone off the scent (which is unlikely, given how terrible they are at social media), they've still got them. Maybe they plan to run them in TCT to train some new drivers up?
Good move for them either way, leaving it a year before taking the plunge so the hiccups have already been found by Dynamics.
I think it'll be a good season, some new cars kicking about which will take a while to get the results so it should give some other teams a chance to get some points early on.

The new Team Dynamics livery is a bit of a dogs dinner isn’t it?!

Never understand the obsession with liveries. It's not F1 where one company pays for the whole thing so it's always going to be a compromise of clashing colours and different sized logos. I'm sure they all do the best they can within the limits of the sponsors needs.
Simple really, what makes any racing car iconic? 9 times out of 10 it's the livery. Look at the Jordan 191, a decent F1 car but nothing outstanding, regarded as one of if not the best looking cars of all time, anything with a Gulf livery whether it's last or first is loved by the fans, more attention was given to the two factory 911's in GTE during last years Le Mans because they were in Rothmans and Pink Pig style liveries, if they hadn't been in those they'd have had a fraction of the attention. Like I said it's not F1. BTCC doesn't have the luxury of one sponsor per car. I get the idea of a nice livery in general but all I see on BTCC pages (which is the subject here) is people going on about how bad the liveries are. I'm sure they would all look great if one sponsor picked up the bill for the whole car but they do the best they can with all the clashing colours, shapes and sizes they have to contend with.Robmarriott said:
To be fair, people complain when it's one sponsor like Pirtek.
I think they just like to moan to be honest. I always thought the Pirtek liveries looked great, especially the chrome version. It certainly worked as far as advertising as I always notice a Pirtek van and make the connection.Kraken said:

Would we not count procuring the funding to go racing as part of "how good you are"? Its the same sponsorship market for everyone, some people are just better at extracting it.
That's an interesting point. I think you're right, in that selling yourself and procuring sponsorship is an important 'soft skill' a racing driver needs, similar to communicating with engineers and getting on well with the team in order to extract the maximum from the people who support you. But I think the problem is that some people start with a massive advantage in this area, while others start from zero. If your parents are millionaires and mates with lots of wealthy, influential people who run/own businesses, then obviously it's going to be much easier to procure sponsorship compared to a kid from a poor background. But it's the way it is, the way it always has been, and the way it always will be unless there is concerted effort from charities, governments and racing team junior programmes to find and fund talent that would otherwise not make it to the top levels of the sport due to lack of money/connections. IMO, sim racing will help with this, as it's a way for people to get behind the wheel without needing $$$$$$, and gets them spotted (as it's becoming increasingly clear as the sims get more realistic that the skills transfer across into real life).
I watched an interesting documentary last night on gentleman drivers in the WEC. Those guys are paying between $1m and $5m a year for their drives. The part that struck me was that three out of the four featured drivers had all been drivers at a young age and had to stop because they couldn't afford to carry on. Then they made their fortunes and got back into it much later in life. They earned it in more than one way.
Sim racing just moves the goalposts from large amounts of money to large amounts of time though. There is always going to be someone on the outside looking in for whatever reason. That's life.

Nothing to do with Rob Austin, it was a livery reveal...

Great sponsor to have I think, it's a name everyone knows, the livery might not be to everyone's taste but if it pays the bills, that's all that matters.
Presumably means free pasties in the paddock too!
