Couple of years ago, we went on a works day at Thruxton karting. It was awful weather, pissing it down, and the times had all been delayed so there was a stag do group ahead of us, who'd not begun when we truned up. Seems that the stag was a karter as were most of his mates, but there was this old boy there, i'm not kidding, he was huge, seriously must have been 20 stone kitted up. Looked well out of place amongst all these younger lads a lot of whom had their own seat padding, kart suits etc. You can tell they did it regularly, the fat guy it from what we found out later "used to race a bit 30 years ago"!
The whole place just looked confused by what went on.........this big guy was 2nd fastest in free practice, (it was utterly pissing down, karts were on slicks).
First race, he went from 2nd to 8th by first corner, (!) but came back to win the race. In the second race, it was reverse grid from qualifying, so he started 2nd last, last into first corner by some margin....we could not believe what we saw, he came round at end of first lap leading! He got by 8 or 9 drivers in just one chicane!! It was bonkers to watch, no one could work out how he did it.

In the "final", they call you up based on fastest laptimes, first lad up was about 8 stone max, own suit, helmet, seat insert...up he walks to his kart......2nd,,,,,,,,here's the fat bloke, to huge cheers from the whole place!! He was in this huge XXXL rubber rain suit and borrowed lid....!!It was utterly hilalrious to see the comparison. Then 12 or so more whippersnappers fill the grid...…….off they go, first corner, fat guy is back to 9th, he drives the nuts off it on the drying tract and ended up 3rd.

I suppose what this suggests is 2 things.........weight really messes you up, hence his awful starts, but he was the most amazing driver I think I've ever seen, it was ridiculous how good he was, particularly in the awful rain conditions. Clearly a proper talent, but he still couldn't not beat the 8-10 stone lads in the final.

So lose some weight, then hunt down this fat old guy and ask how the fk he was doing it, cos I don't have a clue!
