I'm sure that this is a bit of a long shot, but does anyone have a Pirelli F1 rear tyre they'd like to get shot of? I'm looking for one of 2015 vintage - I'm not particular whether it's a Super Soft, Soft, Medium, Hard, Intermediate or Wet!

I bought a rear 2015 Red Bull wheel a little while ago and feel it would look a whole lot more interesting with the appropriate tyre biggrin

Cheers thumbup

No 2015s I'm afraid as those sizes are still under embago for us - got plenty of 2013 sizes if you fancy a stanced scene look F1 wheel though? laugh

Does this mean I may have trouble getting hold of one for a 2015 car?

Won't putting some rubber on it make your chosen location smell like the local tyre fitter's waiting room?

Hadn’t actually considered the potential stinkiness factor. I’ll get used to it biggrin

Don't Pirelli take all of the tyres back at the end of a Grand Prix and destroy them?

I watched them doing that at the end of the British Grand Prix round the back of the pits. Inters and wets as well as slicks getting knifed and removed. can anyone explain why they do this? Why can't they be used at the next Grand Prix that needs those compounds?

They smell for ages, it's better to just use the rim in a creative way. I have a WEC wheel with a glass top that is a small (quite discrete) table now, and an F1 wheel I use as a plant pot...

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Shelf life I suppose. Older tyres would behave differently to newer tyres so it would make it unfair for the teams.

All to do with bar codes, so I was told when I was at testing this year! Pirelli produce all the tyres in the factory, its there that they are all allocated to a car/driver for that race.
At the end of that race they are all collected up and returned and destroyed, used or not!

I asked why could they not just reuse the unused ones next time, its all to do with allocation, as the next batch is produced for the next race.

Seems a waste to me but thats F1

2013 and 2015 sizes are the same. Different construction and very slightly different profile shapes, but the physical sizes are the same.

You are right to a large extent, but there is a little more to it. With regard to Wets and Inters there is an impact from long periods of heating which can harden the compounds, so they will behave differently on track. They are all replaced at the same time for all teams to ensure sporting equity. DTM does not do this and consequently has issues with teams having wets of different ages performing very differently (sometimes up to four seconds a lap between sets) despite not allowing any tyre warmers - it's purely down to the compound ageing.

There's a further issue regarding carriage of wheels/tyres, especially on flyaway events. Space and weight are at a premium and there isn't room for the teams to carry mounted tyres. All teams have specific flight cases for their rims which, being 13-inch, are quite compact to carry around. Also it's important to note that two consecutive races will not necessarily have the same or even similar compound allocation so there may be no crossover at all.

Look for a GP2 tyre instead. They are the same size and may some may have escaped into the wild. The alternative is to find a show tyre. When all the assets of the defunct Caterham F1 team was up for sale a couple of years ago they had several show or travel tyres available - they are the correct size and shape but the important internal aspects are different. These might be your best option.

As has been noted several times above the F1 race tyres are all scrapped and none will be available for sale.

Will definitely look into the GP2 option - or if anyone here can point me in the right direction?

I have seen some of the ex show tyres / travel tyres advertised. Also noted that back in 2015 you could buy new F1 tyres direct from Pirelli at 400 Euros a piece.
