Historics feel souless at Silverstone today
I get that the people actually racing probably like itA car park in Vegas would be better, at least there’d be pretty lights.
It needs a big , powerful, fast and noisy car to make an impression at Silverstone now . It was never great for smaller cars, but I've seen thrilling , 40 car FF1600 races on the old circuit . Now a car which would be jaw dropping at Cadwell is meh at Silverstone .
But I don't go to the Classic just to watch racing . I won't miss a big field of Formula Juniors sparring into Village , nor T70s and LMP1 cars at Brooklands or Farm but most of the appeal of the event is in pit and paddock - where else can I stand next to a Ferrari 1512 when its 1500cc V12 is warming up , or talk to the chap who owns the Porsche 356 Jim Clark raced? And because it's not full of over excitable children of all ages like the Grand Prix is , you bump into all sorts of folk without fans shrieking for selfies . Two examples - admiring a Fifties Jaguar in a garage I was engaged in conversation with an old chap in a blazer - David Hobbs . Or queuing for an ice cream I noticed the bloke and his missus in front of me looked familiar - Ross Brawn . No-one bothered him - he was another enthusiast enjoying a day out.
