I drove with some friends in 2008 from London to mongolia (as many others have done in the past). It included going through SE Ukraine (Donetsk), which is of course no longer possible.

No border crossings until entry to Ukraine, which was also straightforward. Into Russia was longer, and into mongolia (from Russia) took ages. Sadly no longer possible unless you have a suitable passport...

The car only had to do a 1 way journey, but if we'd been in something more prepared (e.g. a Toyota Hilux), there's no reason that we couldn't have come back too. Indeed we met some well prepared Australians in mongolia who were doing just that....
