I'm travelling from n.Lincs next weekend over to Holyhead, obvious M-Way route is M180>>M62>>M6>>M56 which should take about 4 hours or so. Having a quick look at the map reveals the A628 and A635 from Barsnley to Stockport, I'm guessing it is a rather interesting road but would going that way be suicide bearing in mind I have a ferry to catch?

I'm also driving my Passat estate so taking full advantage of the road with dogs and luggage is out of the question!

The A628 Woodhead pass should be the best driving road in the UK, but its 'pants'!! I was stuck behind a tanker stuck behind a push bike, nightmare in a Sagaris but torture in a Passat! BTW Ex RAF so I wouldnt lie just to get a clear run to Stockport .....would I? biggrin

You're not going to be able to have any fun with the luggage & dogs in the car, so you might as well keep to the motorways and a nice & safe 80mph or so.

The roads over can be nice, but it all depends on traffic, time of day, weather, etc. Unless it's very early in the morning you'll be in a good bit of traffic on any weekend travelling on the A55 anyway, or the A55/A483/A5/A55 if you divert that way.

You could try keeping to the motorway until you get to the end of the M56, and then see what time you've got. If you've got a good two hours, then come off the M56, onto the A55 and then onto the A494 and then take the A5 to Bangor to rejoing the A55.
