The first thing I think when I see these behemoths is how glad I am not to be buying the tyres on them! 346 a tyre for 16k miles is eye watering!
Fingers crossed you get the camera issues sorted this time at MB.
They aren't quite ready for a change just yet, but even so that is a lot of cash for a tyre as you say. Fingers crossed you get the camera issues sorted this time at MB.
Thanks. I spoke to Merc yesterday about the camera, so I'm hoping that they sort it out on Monday. The warning message bong about it keeps driving me mad!
So the car went in today to have the windscreen cameras looked at. They have been cleaned and recalibrated, but it still pinged the warning up on me on the way home from collecting it though! I phoned Merc back and they suggested seeing how it behaves over the next couple of days(because it has been quite foggy today and that can ping the warning up they said).
If it still does it over the next couple of days then they will order a new camera for it. So we'll see, although it has been in twice now for the cameras so I was hoping that it would be fixed today to be honest.
I got given a 2022 A180 with only 200 miles on it as a loan car, and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I was expecting when you consider that it is only a 1.3 engine with only 136bhp. I was pleasantly surprised with it, and the GLE felt absolutely massive at first after I'd jumped straight out of the A-Class though! I liked how small/light the A-Class felt in comparison. The 7 speed DCT felt decent/well matched to it as well I thought.

That's a beast of a car Lee! As soon as I saw the R22 325x35 tyres I thought he's not going to enjoying paying for a new set
I was surprised that you let them fit a non Merc windscreen as the car is in warranty you can insist on one especially as the car was 9 days old, plus that pattern part screen may explain the issues with the sensors.
Thanks bud!

The windscreen was annoying to be honest. I told the salesman about the crack in it and what was the best thing to do and he said you go through the insurance. So I did that and then the insurance approved fitters were struggling to get hold of a Merc one. So in the end I went with Autoglass and they fitted the none OEM one to it.
I completely agree that the none Merc screen is probably upsetting it, or maybe Autoglass upset the camera when they fitted the screen? I just don't know. I've looked very close at photos of both windscreens and they look identical, however there maybe some little details that make all the difference though.
Both me and my missus were saying yesterday that all this tech is nice, however it is just a lot more things to go wrong though.
I've been finding it difficult getting hold of the Pirelli rear tyres. I ordered 2 at £407 each but I got a phone call back to say that they couldn't get hold of them. Plus companies like Camskill/tyre leader don't seem to stock them either.
So I decided on going for Continentals instead because they seem to be a lot easier to get hold of. Plus they are cheaper at £633 for 2. I did see the odd place offering the Pirellis for just over £500 each, but I didn’t fancy paying that amount for one tyre.
Managed to squeeze almost 21k miles out of the rear tyres, but I'm still miffed that the car needs new tyres when it isn't even a year old yet though!
We've been discussing changing/swapping the cars around, because it feels like it isn't the most cost effective car to pile the miles onto. It will probably mean getting rid of the M4 for something more economical, but ideally I don't want to do that, but we will see what happens though.

You must love that 370Z if the M4 is for the chop instead of that ?
Or is a it value thing ?
My lad is thinking of selling his 350Z, he likes it but it feels a bit tardy after a Golf R and driving the ST, he wants something faster.
I do love both the 370Z and M4 a lot for different reasons. With hindsight we probably should've stuck with the previous GLC rather than throwing a lot of money at the GLE to buy that instead. Or is a it value thing ?

The depreciation of the GLE hurts because of the miles its doing(depreciation is bad anyway on new cars to be fair though), plus it feels like a bit too nice of a car to be using as a high mileage workhorse if you know what I mean. I don't really know what the best plan of attack is to be honest.
I don't want to see the M4 go because for me is a fantastic all round performance car, but the plan would possibly be to swap the M4 for something like a 420d and pile the miles on that instead. Lets see what happens.
I can see where your Son is coming from regarding the 350Z, and the turbo stuff do tend to definitely make them feel slower than they probably are.
The new tyres were fitted today, and the chap at the tyre place said to me how wide and chunky they looked when he saw them being delivered. I've had to let a fair bit of air out of them because the tyre fitters always seem to put about a 100psi in them!
The old rear tyres looked fine on the outside edges, but the middle of the tyres were like slicks...so they were definitely ready. The Contis are a softer compound so I'm not expecting them to last quite as many miles as the Pirellis did. I'll swap the fronts to Contis when they are ready so that I'm back to all the same brand again. Although the Contis are Merc approved tyres like the Pirellis are to be fair.

What’s fuel economy and other costs like on the 400d? I suppose the weight of it doesn’t help. Next door to us have a GLE450 and while it sounds great, it certainly likes a drink. They do maybe 3,000 miles per year though so who cares.
It is currently showing an overall average of 37mpg, but it will do a bit more than that if you baby it. The 2300kg weight doesn't help matters though as you say, but compared to what a petrol version would do mpg wise I don't think that I can complain to be fair.
Servicing wise I take the monthly plan out at £37, because when I had the GLC it would drop the odd expensive service in, so I just personally find the service plan a little easier to swallow. Servicing is 1 year/15,500 miles whichever comes first.
I bet that GLE450 does sound really lovely!

Just had one of these for 2 days
- has odd longitudinal pitching motion on less good surfaces/, feels weird .
- when one whee goes over a pothole or imperfection the road, like a small ridge, at higher speeds under acceleration, it feels like the whole car does a kind of sideways shimmy. I think it may have been stability control playing with the 4wd system? Anyway it was odd, never felt anything similar in another car.
These two things that you mention here baffle me with it as well, and I've never felt that in any other car either. It can feel quite off putting I reckon. I've read that the full size Range Rovers do something similar too. - has odd longitudinal pitching motion on less good surfaces/, feels weird .

That sideways shimmy you mention was quite scary when the rear tyres were low on tread for sure, but it is much better now the rear tyres are new again though.
The car is on 22k miles now and I'm keeping an eye on the front tyres because they don't feel quite as great as they were now they are getting low on tread.
The car is going in in a week or so for the drivers side tie rod end to be replaced(it was on a 2 month back order apparently) under warranty because they found some play in it the last time it was in.
It is also having the windscreen camera looked at(hopefully replaced) because that is still playing up and pinging the "camera view restricted" warning message(it has been in to be cleaned/recalibrated twice already). So hopefully that gets sorted.

- standing start 0-60 (it was a hire car…) is 50 % accelerating and 50 % gear changes. There are about a million between 5 and 60 mph, seemingly.
Did you try it in sport mode? Apparently in sport mode it adds more boost into the second turbo, whereas in comfort mode it doesn't do that in comparison I believe. I'm used to a million gears now...because the previous GLC that we had for 4.5 years had the same gearbox!

The GLE went in on Monday and it was quite amusing/eventful. I'd ordered a loan car and that was meant to be an A-Class, however I was then told that it wasn't actually on site, so I had 3 choices. Sit and wait or rearrange, or take an electric smart car home with me. So I went with the smart car.
However when I got in it there was only 45 miles left on the range and I'm about 15 miles away from the dealer. So range anxiety set in. I was freezing in the car because the heater wasn't on, so I switched the heater on and it immediately shaved 10 miles off the range!(so I turned it off again). Then the windscreen started steaming up so I went with the old fashioned way of just opening a window instead.
Then to add insult to injury the car was booked in for both the drivers side tie rod end and the windscreen camera. However when I went to collect it they'd done the tie rod end but they hadn't touched the camera, but they lied to me and said they had though. So when I spoke to the service manager he then later admitted to me that they'd made a mistake and looked at a previous booking and they hadn't touched the camera.
Anyway the new camera is hopefully arriving at the back end of next week, so it is booked in for the following week for that to be done now.
There was plenty of piss taking from my missus/mates when they saw the car that I ended up driving!

You have a lot more patience than me Lee, and seem to be taking the poor dealership service well!
The main reason I sold my (used) E400d after just 12 months was the poor aftersales service - I'm now back in the BMW fold.
I guess we each have our preferences. I've always been a BMW person and tried Audi (once) and Merc (once). The only brand to pull me away so far has been Lexus (2 cars in the recent past - RX450h and RC F).
Yes and I'm pretty laid back nowadays about things, especially in comparison to how I was when I was younger. My missus generally gets a lot more frustrated about things than I do now, and she says to me that I need to show my teeth more like I used to. I have a couple of mates that have had a really poor experience with Mercedes as you mention, and they never went back either.
The blatant lying to my face I wasn't happy with though, because I've always worked hard at my honesty/integrity, but I'm arguably far too forgiving nowadays though.
It definitely hasn't been the smoothness ownership ride with this car at all really, and we both find that a real shame because we really like the car to be fair.
So the new windscreen camera has been fitted for a few days now and the warning message hasn't pinged up, so I'm guessing that the original one did have a fault on it. So fingers crossed that it is fixed now.
I was given an A250e as a loan car and I wasn't all that impressed with it(I actually preferred the A180 that I had a few months back in comparison).
The battery was empty on it, so it basically left me with the 1.3 engine on its own. That 1.3 engine has quite a lot of work to do because the car is actually heavier than the M4 is!
It was also one of the worst handling cars that I've ever driven, and it understeered basically on every corner I went around. Plus the engine is really rough sounding as well when it kicks in. I read a couple of reviews on it and they mirrored my experience with it as well.
I do like having these loan cars because it gives me a bit of experience with other cars other than my own I think.

I just wanted to mention how disappointed I am with the wear of the rear Continental tyres. They've only been on since January and covered around 5k miles, however they are already lower in wear than the front Pirellis that have now covered 26k miles in comparison. Quite shocking really I reckon. So I decided on going for Continentals instead because they seem to be a lot easier to get hold of. Plus they are cheaper at £633 for 2. The problem I've got is that I'm still struggling to get hold of the Pirellis though, and I don't really want to put another 2 Continental rear tyres on when they only last 2 minutes. The choice of tyre options seem very limited with this car as well frustratingly.
I've seen some places who offer MPS4S for it, so I'm wondering if they are worth giving a go. They are more expensive than the Contis, but I reckon that it will be worth it in the long run though.

Man buys one of the behemoths of the road, then complains about tyre life!
True!

I'm just a bit frustrated about the difference in wear rates between the Pirellis versus the Continentals really. As you say though...you can't really moan about a car that weighs 2300kg and has 325 wide rear tyres...and then expect them to last though!
It is the tight git part of me sneaking out I reckon!
