Thought I’d decided what car I wanted and now you’ve got me looking at E92 M3’s driving

That is a great photo! cool

I've always absolutely loved the bonnet bulge on them big time as well. I love how prominent it is when you're driving it for sure. thumbup
That really stood out for me too when I test drove a few last year before bottling actually buying one.

A lovely twilight drive tonight.

Really quite something. You can get in a rhythm and think “this isn’t that fast a car” before rapidly thinking “this road wasn’t so short last time”!

Totally agree. These are the touches I love on the M cars. Normal. But not normal!

Very similar to how my uncle found his; he came to it from cars that were more sledgehammer than finesse and it hung around for much longer than any of the others. He described it as a car that hidden depths and grew on you (and one that I should have bought from him banghead )

Added my 74 year old dad to the insurance today - a refund of £142. Then my mum - a further saving of £32.

They drive a 1.0 3 cylinder Skoda citygo.

I did get the car cleaned. It could do with a detail to get some swirls and scratches out of it, but it looks nice from a few metres.

Love this old thing (even if it's dead slow compared to the XFR!).

Just had a big service and various bits sorted out, driving lovely.

You could always supercharge it smile

Whilst it may be slower in a straight line (it's 90+ bhp down as standard!) it's still faster round tracks which suggests the XFR drives quite heavy? M3 is hardly a featherweight but well balanced smile

I have concluded that the exhaust as-is is just a bit too much for me. The cold start up is ridiculous (I like a good cold start up, but it’s really loud). Ideas as to options welcome. I’m not sure exactly what was done to the exhaust beyond it “having a scorpion fitted”. It does sound outrageous pulling up to the redline though!
My understanding is that the cold start was for emissions. I believe you can have it turned off via a remap. Not something that can be done with Carly, I think it needs to be a proper remap. Try giving Evolve a call if it’s still bothering you.

OP I understand your musings, the torque availability of the XFRs is crazy - a manual E92 is a lovely thing indeed, however whilst you were deciding which gear you'd like to enjoy hearing the S65 being worked to the redline in, the XFR would have just kicked down and gone.

Kudos for going for a manual, I preferred that gearbox when I drove the two back to back around 2010 - it's only as I got older I found the irrelevance in comparing one car's laptime with another's, for a good road car requires a completely different set of attributes. If I had 1 leg or grew up playing Gran Turismo I might have considered the automatic, as it is though it'd be a wasted opportunity for me to dance on the pedals and hear the S65 lug it out to 8k+ rpm.

Still a great looking and sounding car OP.

I liked the manual saloon that I was going to buy before having to bail because of my mortgage going up. They’re definitely a car that needs to be worked to get the best out of them.

A standard XFR around the tight Top Gear track, I think.

Just need to get used to a slow car I guess wink

Even the 'Ring, apparently, which is far from a twisty track smile James May would be rolling his eyes right about now hehe

I'm sure you'll manage, you have a 190E wink

I know that I pretty much moan almost everyday about my old E92 M3, but this thread always makes me miss it a bit though for sure.

Well that was fun. Over 3,500 miles done on a roadtrip from the UK to Italy.

Overall impression: the M3 was great. Absolutely fine in terms of comfort. Quick when wanted. And a bit boot/rear seats used for a BIG booze run from and to our fantastic villa in the middle of nowhere on a hill in Tuscany.

This was a great user case for an M3. Comfy enough, big enough, and dead fun. Special with that 8,000rpm v8. Long periods at 155mph on the autobahn, dead fun up and then down Stelvio pass in the evening when quiet. I was told it sounded great from the bar at the top!

23.1 mpg. I have not calculated the fuel bill, but it was certainly an amount of fuel smile

What a car for the job.

And no, I didn't clean the car at all during the trip. It did have a full service before leaving the UK though.

Good to use a car properly!

You were fortunate to hit an empty autobahn for a length of time! Did you intentionally plan the route to go via the Stelvio?
