Never selling my 981
Discussion
Never say never obviously, but after six years of ownership, I still can’t see imagine a scenario where I decide to move on to something else.
Sure I wish it was a convertible and I wish it had a manual gearbox, but not enough to go through the hassle of changing.
This car has taken me on some great journeys with great friends, so there’s probably a bit of sentimentalism going on, but I still look forward to every single drive.
I always said when I could afford it I’d buy a 991.2 cabriolet with a manual box, but now that I can I just don’t fancy it. Instead, I’ve spent £4k fitting the X73 kit as well as some other new suspension components.
The car feels more aggressive now, definitely turned it up a notch! So here’s to another six years of motoring.

Everyone says that, you’ll end up selling it and moving on. I said that years ago about my 911 Carrera 3.0. I ended up with a messy divorce in 2001 and it had to go.
Ha, well of course I’ll have to move on at some point. I could wrap the car around a lamp post tomorrow for all I know, but my point is I’m not bored of it at all. The X73 kit has given it a new lease of life too, and a new character to enjoy.

I suspect the auto was built the same as the manual so wouldn’t be all that hard to convert. "They’ say never to build a car you can buy but you can’t buy that sentimental attachment so if you ever have reason to do something with it you could consider a swap to manual. I did a 944 and Mr Porsche had handily left all the bolt holes in the shell for the manual so it was easy to do.Sure I wish it was a convertible and I wish it had a manual gearbox, but not enough to go through the hassle of changing.

Sorry to hear, but hopefully that’s not relevant to the OPs circumstances! My wife has had her 2.7 981 Cayman for nearly 7 years from new and is adamant that she's never selling it.
As far as she's concerned there's nothing else out there that gets close to it. She's not bothered its not the fastest or the best equipped or has the latest ICE. Her view is that it looks better, sounds better and drives better than anything else and that's just the way she likes it.
I'm certainly not going to argue with that.

I’m getting to the keeper stage of my Car life.
Got a Boxster GTS coming soon (I ordered it last July FFS) and I’ve recently had my 997.1 restored to future proof it for the next 100k miles.
Probably get a Macan EV in a few years for pootling around town, but the 911 and GTS will be keepers until we can’t get in and out of them.
As a "serial car buyer" there's a few that I wish I'd kept but didn't*.
However, built a Caterham in 1990/1 was my car through all sorts of life including a divorce but 12 year s on I sold it when a TVR came into my life.
A few cars came and went but I ended up buying the Caterham back about 7 year ago. Spent a while tidying it up, used it very little and am now thinking it's time to sell again. (Boxster incoming). It's either the Caterham or the Lotus Excel (or both) have to go.

List was late 30s back in 2016... a good few price rises happened since those halcyon days. Have just looked up the current list price, is £48k!I didn't exactly go crazy with options. The only one I think I miss is a rear wiper for reversing out of parking spaces in the rain.

Base price for the Boxster version is now £49,700. Then again, a 986 2.5 back at launch in 1996 was about £35k new base price with plenty going well over £40k with options. I had a 1997 2.5 986 a while back that someone paid £42,000 for in 1997. Which is £67k in 2021 £s according the BoE calculator.Fair enough mate. If you've got the car you love and nothing within reason will replace it then why not. Many happy miles of motoring
I've got a 981 GTS too and I really like it. I've had it a year and no plans to swap just yet. There are about 5 or so sports cars floating around in my head that I'd quite fancy having, but none of them enough yet to make the move. Not going to rush it either - I'll know when the time is right.

I felt the same way aoout my 450 Chimaera. & years I had that car and loved it (lavishly!). New interior, full respray, new exhaust, many upgrades (it's something one does with a car that has been built out of a parts bin!).
That was until I spent some time in the Picos mountains behind a 987.1 CS. It just looked so planted and curvy. I bought that very car three months after I got back from that particular Eurohoon and was smitten. So smitten that I then 'upgraded' to the 987.2 with every extra one could wish for. Covid hit my business so had to 'downgrade' to the 987.1 Boxster.
It's all good. Drive what you love.

I'am 11 years with my 987.2 CS, I can't see me changing it now, although I was tempted by a Cayman 4.0 GTS I even went to see one, thankfully one look was enough to bin that idea.
Truthfully there is nothing in the Porsche range to tempt me out of my old Cayman...911's are huge.
This is what I love about my 996.1 C2, it feels so small !Truthfully there is nothing in the Porsche range to tempt me out of my old Cayman...911's are huge.
