I understand why some people pronounce it as Porsh in casual conversation, what I don't understand is the negative association with the German pronunciation as shown by various other posts in this thread. Is it just social conformity? Why would it be "snooty" or make someone sound like a "prat" to use the official pronunciation of a foreign name?

Both.

So I've gone with 'other'.

For instance, I quite often sing Nelly's line 'hey little Porsha' when I see another one or arrive back to mine whilst driving the daily. Cringe!

Definitely Porsh to non-car people.

Last night I was stood at a classic car meet with another Porsche driver and he pronounced it correctly when we spotted a Cayman driving in. So I was happy to say it correctly as I was clearly with my people.

I only got a D at A-Level German, but it does feel a bit wrong to mispronounce it so willingly!

Somewhere in between but closer to Porsh. Definitely not Porsha. I once met one of the family and that's how they pronounced it so i think i'm good, whatever language aficionados might say smile

The "E" is pronounced but the emphasis is strongly the first syllable, so maybe what you are referring to is actually just the German pronunciation.

With all the votes for a Brit-centric pronunciation, how come we don't call an Audi an Ordi?

Because they successfully managed to get people to pronounce it correctly through marketing, but the Porsh crowd are incredibly stubborn, despite the company/family making it very clear how they prefer to be referred to.

Hyundai accepted a terrible butchering of their name in the UK market for many years, but now seem to be trying get people to pronounce it correctly.

Porsh doesn't even make sense as an Angicised pronunciation, words in English don't just have an E on the without a purpose, so logically it should be pronounced phonetically.

It's an odd one for me.

I was always "Porsh". I then moved to Germany and lived there for a few years it become "Porsha". I owned one there, so I had to use the word a fair bit - a "Neun Elf".

I now vary, depending on to whom I'm talking. Brits get the Anglicised version, Europeans get the German pronunciation.

I pronounce it the British way despite that not being the correct pronunciation. I'll never call Nike "Nikee" or Nissan "Neesan" either.

On the topic, apparently, I've been saying Hyundai wrong all my life. It's now Hyeeunday. Same with Ikea. That's now "Ick eyya"

If you agree that the German pronunciation is correct then porsh can't be called the British way when many Brits also pronounce it correctly.

Hyeeunday has always been the pronunciation in Korean, I don't know why the UK division went along with such a ridiculous mispronunciation for so long, maybe a Korean higher-up recently caught wind of it and gave them a bcensoreding over it.
