Now this isn't a dig at hand-bag swinging hair-dressers before you lot get on your high horses ... but why is it that MANY Boxster owners always refer to them in threads as 986 / 987 etc?

I've just read something about Gaymans and why the 911 C4S is more expensive than a C4 and there seems to be a trend amongst Boxster owners that they don't want to admit to owning a BOXSTER and hiding behind some numbers.

I reckon it's because it makes it easier to identify.
If someone says boxster it's hard to tell what they're talking about, same as if someone says 911 turbo.

If someone says 987S you know exactly what they're talking about.

VS (993tt) see?

The 986 Boxster is quite different to the 987 Boxster. 911 owners distinguish between their cars using their model designation: 993, 996, 997 etc.

Until the 987 came along I referred to my car as a "Boxster S" - why? To distinguish it from a non-S Boxster. Now I refer to it as a 986S. Because otherwise the next question would always have to be: Is that the 986 or 987?

I think your comment about "Gaymans" rather gave away your attitude to the cars and their owners despite your protestations.

which would be the same reason we say 964 965 993 996 (and 928 968 in my case)I would think. Helps identify which Porsche they are talking about as this forum does cover all porsches as far as I can tell and all the Boxster's are certainly Porsches and pretty awesome ones at that (if only they were 2+2 I'd buy one myself).

Because there are now two models, perhaps? Also 911 C4S could be 993, 996 or 997, hence everyone refers to the model number...

i'm sure its nothing sinister - its just easier to type the numbers quickly. after all the official designation of the 968 cabriolet is the "ohmygodjustsosexygoesrealquickbabemagnetanditscheaperthana911" but I often find i cant be bothered to type all that lot out each time

Why would anyone want to "hide" they have a Boxster? Especially as any Porsche aficiando knows precisely what the model designation numbers mean anyway!

But not everyone is a "Porsche aficiando". I'm not suggesting there is any reason to hide the fact but quite the opposite.

Anyway I expected these sorts of responses. Maybe I'll just delete the post.

Surely its the same with the 964/993/996/997. They are all badged as Porsche Carrera. Nothing more....

fulham911club should have said:
why is it that MANY Porsche owners always refer to them by some numbers.

And the answer would have been:

Because that's what Porsche call them and its the only quick way to distinguish the exact model you're talking about.

In the same way, if this were a Vauxhall forum, people would be referring to their Mk1/Mk2/Mk3 Cavaliers etc. and I bet you wouldn't bat an eyelid. In fact, the Porsche model number is far more succinct and tells you everything you need to know without needing to bother with tediously spelling it all out.

Alright, alright.

If someone asks you "what car do you have?". Do you answer "986S / 996 / 997 / 993 / etc"?

I doubt it.

Well I always used to answer 993 C2 or 996 GT3. I never referred to it as a 911 unless I was talking in the generic sense.

I suspect the problem (if there is one) is because the Boxster has a name, whereas the 911 has always been a number, so talking about 993, 996, 997 just seems like a clarification whereas using 986, 987 etc seems like something less honest. Maybe it's just a case of time needed to get used to it.

In my office if i said i drove a 993tt most people would look at me very strangely. The fact is the vast majority of them would say it was a silver porsche.
Conversely, if i posted a picture of my car on this forum, how many people would refer to it as a 993tt? The vast majority, i'd wager.

Go on then ask a straw people in your office (or wherever you are) the following questions;

1. What is a 993 C2?
2. What is a 986?
3. What is a 996 TT?

Bet you get a lot of blank faces for most people (unless you're on a tradng floor)

No of course not, I say I have a Boxster. The big mistake you are making is that everyone on here is a petrolhead and have knowlege of our marque above that of the average bear! I bet most 968 owners get looked at blankly when they say the have a 968 and have to follow it up with "you know, a PORRSCHAAA"

Now if I meet you on the street and we stike up a conversation about cars you will tell me you drive a 911....and would be pleasantly surprised if I respond by asking whether it is a 993/996/997/GT3 etc.. Now I know you are just "Boxster Baiting" (is that a sport....should be banned i tell ye...phone the labour party)...but come on. I think your obsession with Boxsters indicates a secret desire to switch to a 987/Cayman!

I hope to move to a GT3 or C4S in the new year but know I will be back to a Boxster in the future as they are a fantastic DRIVERS car.

PS...I love the new "one happy family" forum!

Depends on who you're speaking to. Here, where readers can legitimately be assumed to have a little knowledge and would like specifics, a model number would be the default.

Perhaps the real question would be: What is it about the model number that annoys you so? Does 986/987 cause you to overtax your memory dredging up a match, or do you prefer to be in an elite minority that is somehow entitled to use their model #s and resent these upstart Boxster owners from muscling in on your patch?
