It seems I have 3 options for replacing the heavy, quiet twin backbox & cat setup in my 348ts.

I know a tubi sounds good, know nothing about the challenge exhaust sound and fear the straight through pipes may be a little 'too' loud. I am not tracking the car, just want to hear that engine a bit more... has anyone had experience with any of these setups? Cheers

Hi Adi - I understand Ajay took your call today - sorry mate - let us clear things up for you (and all other PHers out there). Very obvious and very layman terms.....
OK!

The Ferrari 348 Exhaust system consists of 3 parts:
1. Exhaust Manifolds.
2. Cat-converters.
3. Silencer.

1.The manifolds collect exhaust flow from the cylinders and feed the....

2.Cat-converters. Internally - Typically made of platinum they contain a honeycombe 3 way structure through which exhaust gasses pass - the harmful pollutants react with the catalyst and are taken out of the airstream. In doing so exhaust flow has been slowed heavily resulting in reduced power and an additional silencing effect - depending on engine around 10dB.
Post cat the exhaust gasses pass to the.....

3. Silencer. These contain baffling/sound insulation in a resonantion chamber which muffles the engines explosions. Once again exhaust flow is slowed as a result of reducing volume.
-------------------------------------------------------

Now for the fun stuff.

CAT-CONVERTER OPTIONS:
1. TubiStyle, cat-replacement pipes - they eliminate the cat and provide zero resistance to exhaust flow and the single largest POWER increase of any exhaust product. Co-incidentally the cat muffling effect is lost and the car is a LOT louder. The car will be marginal with its MOT emissions test and may also trigger check engine warning lights (easily cured).......
2.TubiStyle "Silenced" cat-replacement pipes - AS above but designed to NOT make the car a lot louder - but permit same power increase - more expensive than above.
3. TubiStyle "Sport Cats" - Specially designed cats with a less dense honeycomb structure to permit rapid exhaust flow and deliver a power increase WITHOUT the problems associated with fitting cat replacement pipes. Quite an expensive option for lots of performance with no compromise.

SILENCER OPTIONS:
1. TubiStyle Sports Silencer (what people mistakenly refer to a Tubi Exhaust system - it's not - it's just a silencer) - like a conventional silencer but lighter, smaller, with less baffling insulation material for a louder more exciting sound. As a result there is more exhaust flow than a stock system but not as much as......
2. TubiStyle tube-only exhaust - This is complex pipe work - effectively a silencer by-pass with end pipes at the tips. With no silencer this is a very loud option with race car style sound - no exhaust obstruction - maximal power increase - no resonation chamber so no weight and very light and also cheaper than the Tubi Silencer above.
3. A challenge exhaust is as the first silencer but as it's built for racing - it's smaller and louder - it's also a bad option for your road car - these systems may resonate and provide unwanted vibration at cruising revs (because remember these systems are built for racing - not road use.....)

Pick combination of the two sets of equipment above as suit your power and sound needs.
A genuine straight through system is a set of cat-replacements AND a tube-only muffler ALSO. This is the system I would go for on my Ferrari - It's extreme and for max power AND volume and has dramatic race car style effects like flames from the tail pipes like F40's... However this will be too loud for all but the most committed.

99% of people just get the Tubi Sport silencer and think that's fine alone. Some others then get the cat-replacements and other cat options depending on their volume tolerance and power needs.
Very few get the tube-only silencer and very very few get that AND cat-replacements.

I hope this helps.

Manu
P.S. We can also supply Thermally insulated sport mainfolds for more power and added reliability from the historically weakest part of a V8 Ferraris mechanical design..... there's a world of options out there....

Manu,

Fantastic response - just what I needed to know...

I'll ring you tommorow to discuss the full bypass system - assuming there is a way round the emissions issue, I think I am most interested in this option (you are a good salesman! )

Manu,

What an impressive explanation!
I'm about to purchase my first 355 (Tuscan going..)
Do you have any contact details I could have?
Will certainly need to work on 'sound' when it arrives...

Cheers
