Anyone used or got any opinions on oil additives such as Slick 50 etc ?

Is there any truth in the rumors that the ones with suspended solids such as the PTFE based ones, will actually cause more harm through raised acid levels & clogging of filters ?

I spent 5 years working for Lubrizol and BP Chemicals (Additives) Ltd, albeit in their IT dept.

The general consensus from the chemists was

a) buy a really good oil to start off with, that's got all the additives you'll ever need (and change on time, obviously)

b) you are wasting your money with the likes of Slick 50, but it wont do any harm. basically you are just spending 15 quid (or whatever) on something that's 95% base lube oil. it will hurt your pocket, but not your car.

Don't bother.

Absolutely no independent proof that they do anything positive for an engine (I'm sure they lost a court case in the US in the recent past about their extravagant claims), and why waste the billions of dollars in development and testing that the oil companies spend getting their base product right by tipping other chemicals into it?

Frostie- I really wouldn't do this:

1) You've got 10L of Shell Helix Ultra in your (dry) sump. At £6.00 or so a litre, this has to be one of the most expensive non-racing oils.
2) At normal mileages of <5K a year, your oil is replaced well before it's degraded anyway.
3) I recall reading somewhere that it might invalidate your warranty; it'd get pretty sticky if something went pop and they found stuff in your oil.

PS- thanks for that Ferrari DVD! Intended to watch 10 mins of it when I got back last night and was up 'til 1am.

Thanks guys.

I wasn't intending putting it into the Ferrari BTW ! Just thought of trying it in my Golf but was interested to see if anyone had experience.
