24 Hours of Le Mans postponed till August

New dates set by the ACO with the ambition that spectators will attend in 2021

If you've been savouring the taste of warm French beer and red sausage since 2019, then you've got a little bit longer to wait as the 24 Hours of Le Mans has been knocked back by two months. But there's hope yet; the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) have moved the iconic race to August on the basis that it might yet allow them to open the gates at Circuit de la Sarthe to spectators.

This year's race will see the dawn of the new Hypercar class, specifically established to increase manufacturer participation and grow the associated fanbase. Assuming it's safe to do so and the event can be made to comply with safety guidance, the ACO is obviously keen to see the new era kick-off with a crowd in attendance. As are we.

The competitor entry list is due to be revealed later today, and we're expecting the next spectator update on the 24-hour race towards the end of April. The dates of other races at Le Mans circuit remain unchanged at the moment, with the Le Mans Classic still set to take place across 1-4 July 2021. However, we are keeping a watchful eye on this.

Our customers who've booked to stay on the PistonHeads campsite with our partner 1st Tickets are being contacted with their options. If you'd like to be the first to hear the latest details and to be one of the first to book should the event be open to the public, then you can find more details and register your interest here.

Only five hypercar entries is a bit disappointing. Two Toyotas, two Glickenhaus and an Alpine.

Where's the Valkyrie?

Long gone, the top class is looking very good for the future though

Good luck to them with the revised dates, hopefully things will have changed enough in the next five months to allow a crowd to attend.

Now, how can we get Monsieur Macron to stop talking bks about vaccines not working?

The right decision - and getting fans in is important....they've made their decision early and now hope everything falls into place for August.

Actually only four hypercar entries - the Alpine is the grandfathered in Rebellion LMP1 chassis with some new stickers on it.

Having come in, made a lot of noise, and thrown their weight around to get as many of the rules they wanted in as possible, leading to some other competitors walking away, A-M then stuck up 2 fingers and went to F1 instead.

That’s what happens when a precious F1 racer is in danger of losing his seat and tells daddy he doesn’t want to race tin tops, he wants to be in F1, so daddy buys the company and decides where they are to race.

I’ve also heard the Valkyrie is a lot slower than planned, and far too noisy for road use And a few cancelled orders because of it. Could it end up being scrapped?

To be fair to Lance he actually an OK F1 driver and far from the worst on the grid, so even if 'Jordan' had folded in 2018 based on ability alone he should probably have still found a seat for 2019. I mean he's made the podium twice in a 'second tier' car (helped by Ferarri building a 'tier 3' car) and I can think of 3 drivers right off the bat I'd rank lower than him.

Plus daddy bought the company that was, following the long standing A-M tradition, trying desperately to go bust and there are limits to how deep anyone's pockets are, even a $3.2 billionaire's.

In the Le Mans forum it isn’t looking promising for spectators in August.

I see the race itself going ahead but as for spectators being allowed in, I doubt it very much and thats because France is so behind in its vaccine programme. I'm looking forward to 2022 and plan to do the 24 and the classic all in the same year!
