I am looking at doing this with a friend who has done this before. He's since had a heart operation and is not allowed to drive, so I'd be driving. What are good sources of advice?

1) Do it - it’s amazing
2) Choose your viewing / photography points well in advance and plan your trip around them. We did Brescia on the first day, Sirmione / Lake Garda on the first evening and the Ferrari factory in Maranello on day 3.

We stayed in Sirmione, Modena and Maranello and managed to visit the Ferrari museum(s), Lamborghini factory, Osteria Francescana and Il Cavallino on the trip, as well as having a night in Padua (where we ate at Le Calandre) and a day trip to Verona
3) Keep your wits about you on the roads - everyone, including participants, police and general public, drive in a ‘spirited’ manner in the vicinity of the event
4) Have I said do it?

Hope you have a great trip.

Similar to above , go into Brescia for the start and the final checks on the first day , maybe take a day off whilst the cars go to

Rome and then find a place on the road for when they are coming back up north again on the 3rd day , including seeing the

Ferrari Tributo and Mercedes' running in front of the main field .

The route changes every year so check the official website close to May when it is published .

It is the best car event in the world , nuff said .

Edit ,It might be in June next year , a month later than traditional date .

We'd be competing. Currently shopping for an eligible car.

In that case go for something obscure and Italian. Best chance of getting a slot.

Don't drink too much. The days are long and the nights are short enough already.

I'm really looking for a book by someone who has done it. Not a "ooh, look at all those amazing cars" type book.

Not sure how fast you want to go, but a pal and I are planning this for 2024.

We are looking at a Lancia Ardea. Tiny little V4 and right hand drive. Very slow though....

I would prefer a soft top of some sort, but the Ardea is cheap and left field..

Do the regs still require all competing cars to have a previous history of MM participation? I'm sure I read that they are also very selective with what they accept, even if it is a past entrant.

Remember something about this, didn't his cars engine munch itself part way through? Seem to remember he'd bought the car, (ferrari?), especially and ended up sitting at the side of the road in tears, understandably!!

Who do I have to know to offer to be a support driver/extra set of hands? Would love to be involved somehow.

It was a Maserati, but yes that's pretty much the long and short of it.

I believe they’ve changed this rule so now you just need a model that has competed in period rather than a car with actual period history though the latter get priority ( in some circumstances guaranteed) entry

Ardea is a good idea, not everyone in period had a 300SLR and many locals used whatever they could.

Pretty much this but also the utterly st way he treated his professional and very patient female co driver.

Martin came over as a typical moneyed but clueless tit

Professional? From memory she hadn't even co-driven anything before, hence him coming across as a prick as his better-half wanted to co-drive for him, but he picked some other woman to co-drive for him, despite her complete lack of experience? Haven't watched it for a few years so could be remembering incorrectly.

From memory the engine had just been rebuilt prior to the event & he was told not to over-rev it. What did he do?
From then on, I’ve thought of him as being a complete & utter tit.
