So…it’s nearly time!

I will be driving from northern Germany (Hannover), having just driven down from the northern tip of Denmark; stopping a night in Trier, then another in Limoges where my son is flying to from the UK.

When I planned the trip back in April, seated tickets were already sold out. Any tips on where to go to see some of the racing without grandstand tickets?

Also, any tips for what to do on the Friday and Saturday?
Ah! Just seen and read the link from earlier on.

Has the route for Saturday’s rally been released yet?

We’re staying about 30 mins drive outside.

Thanks in advance.

Who’s going then?

Heading off early tomorrow… mix of autoroutes and national roads from Calais I for me, a la Waze, to maintain some progress whilst having some driving interest. Staying in Angouleme somewhere near the river and station; dropped on a hotel cancellation after almost giving up on being anywhere near the town.

Give me a wave if our paths cross; blue M2C with frozen gold wheels (around town I might be on a Brompton biglaugh )

I'm taking the boat to Caen early tomorrow, overnighting at Le Mans, and aim to be in Angouleme for the Friday evening. Staying a few miles out of town. Setting off (and hopefully arriving in!) a silver Ferrari 400. Have a great weekend!

Three of us took the overnight ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe and arrived in Angouleme at midday after a brisk drive. I booked some accommodation about 20 minutes walk from the circuit in June and just have general admission tickets. I visited a couple of times, just on the Sunday, a good few years ago whilst holidaying in the Loire Valley and had a blast. We anticipate having a relaxing weekend bimbling around and soaking up the atmosphere. I’m sure we’ll see some parts of the event and miss some others but a great follow up to a weekend at Goodwood. Life is sometimes very good.

Great atmosphere in the historic quarter last night, mainly fuelled by the rugby.

Town is properly bonkers; stunning mediaeval architecture graciously weathering as it does, cheek by jowl with brutalist mid century concrete, which is decaying considerably faster… looking forward to a daylight view… not sure my Brompton will get out the car boot given the size of the hill here!

That brings back great memories; last time I went, we ended up having an impromptu 'drink off' with a French rugby ensemble upstairs in Chez Paul, can't remember what time we ended up falling out of there... I seem to remember the toilet upstairs was a stand alone cubicle in the corner of the room, which it turned out hadn't had the roof properly nailed down - brought great amusement for the French sneaking over and lifting the roof when one of their group was mid-flow hehe

Hope you all enjoyed it. We had a great time.

Visited the museum, linked earlier, on the way down. Great place with over 400 cars. Need to allow plenty of time.

A little bit of rain on on Sunday spiced the racing up a bit.

Great to see a Hillman Hunter GLS racing. Can't remember when I last saw one. Uses the same engine as the Sunbeam Rapier H120 with the Holbay head. Also a Dolly Sprint in the same race. Shame it was tail ended. The MGB with the bonnet vents did well considering what it was up against. We enjoyed the pre-war MG race with cars from the MG Car Club's Triple M register. Don't think I have ever seen an MG R type before. There can't have been many pre-war racing cars with independent suspension all round.

We saw some of the competing cars on the dock side at Portsmouth on the way out and then others at Caen on the way back.

Yep; cracking trip. Angouleme is an interesting place in its own right to host the event; driving home, as I did, across the Loire valley via the likes of Le Lude only augmented the enjoyment. Long run but very much worth it

Does anyone know when the 2024 dates will be confirmed? Seen suggestions that it's 12-16 Sep but would be good to know. Having missed this year, I want to get a hotel booked well in advance!

I've seen these dates advertised, but all have been marked 'provisional'.

Bearing in mind that the event is supposedly always held on the third Sunday of the month, I would think it's a reasonably safe bet smile

I'm looking to go to the 2024 race as not been before. We are looking at going down on Thursday to have all day friday and saturday and head back sunday lunchtime of the ferry. What might we miss on the Sunday? I'm not too clear on whether it's the day when most things are happening?

Yes Sunday’s the main day, qualifying in the morning and racing from 12ish I think until late afternoon.

Out on Thursday / Friday back Monday is best we find.

On Saturday we usually venture out for lunch in Brantome, superb roads through the forest on way there and back & if you time it right you can join onto the car rally back into Angouleme.

Great, thanks. May have to alter plans then and head back Monday.

I went for the first time this year, and the Sunday was terrific. The highlight of a wonderful weekend.

Accommodation all booked, fantastic apartment overlooking one of the hairpins! It’ll be great to just pop in and out throughout the weekend, without having to trudge up a 45% gradient from our usual place.

Planning a leisurely drive down and back this year, avoiding the motorways with a stopover en route.

Just need to plan routes now, any suggestions would be welcome! biggrin
