Why are manufacturers so unoriginal?
Discussion
I just read a story about the new Lamborghini Urus being tested and yet again, its seems to be another 4.0 v8 twin turbo engine....
Why are all of the manufacturers using exactly the same format for all engines for their high performance cars - audi, bentley, mercedes, BMW and now lamborghini - probably a few more too. Even Aston is buying in a 4.0 v8 from Merc for the new vantage and DB11.
Why is everyone using the same form of engine and why are they not trying to differentiate through their engines ?
I love that some manufacturers take a different approach to performance - and this is appealing to me as a potential buyer of a perfornance car.
With performance figures all being similar this distills the purchase choice to packaging - which is a shame.

thats cleared that up. i thought it was more linked to power to weight plus emissions across the range but your comments are probably accurate.
but why not a small V10 or a larger capacity v6 - this variation breeds discussion with your friends on what you'll buy next and why. the 5 in the RS3 has other uses surely!
if they all perform the same, sound the same and have the same drive train, all we end up doing is buying a package based on looks alone.
I much prefer a V12 Vantage to a a v8 vantage, a golf R32 to a golf R etc - variety promotes preferences among consumers / petrolheads and what every manufacturer does when they all use the same powertrain is make us decide on 'brand values' and 'packaging' and thats a shame.
i still feel compelled to but a 991 turbo as its a flat 6 TT rather than the ubiquitous 4.0 v8 TT

Because they are all fighting for sales in the same market!
Say you are building an SUV (like Ur-anus...)
How big should it be? About the same size as it's competitors
How much should it cost? About the same as it's competitors
How much power should it have? About the same as it's competitors
So, punch the same questions into your computer and you get the same answers! These days, all the components are supplied by the same big Teir1 suppliers (Bosch, Valeo, Denso, ZF, AAM etc etc) so really the only difference is the badge on the front and how it looks.....
