Hi

I have a 2004 Peugeot 206 1.4i

Not so long ago first gear would just not react at all, the gear stick itself has not gone floppy - it's like the gears just weren't there. But then after 3 or 4 attempts, they would go in and just continue as normal(?).

So I got it looked at and as I thought it was a slipping clutch - so got a new one fitted.

However, today the same thing happened with the gear not going in, but try 3 or 4 times and it's there as normal and the car drives as it should.
2nd is pretty rough to go in but all the other gears are ok - it's very bizarre.

Is it a linkage and gear oil thing? I've read that you have to use really specific gear oil.

If anyone can help that would be great. Just want to get it sorted asap so I can flog it, it's a perfectly clean pug all round this is such an annoyance.

These are two completely separate things. Gear oil would be inside the gearbox and is nothing to do with your problem. From the symptoms I suspect that you either have a worn gear linkage or a remote gear lever mount that is loose / has damaged bushes so that there is play in the system. Whichever of those is the cause, what's happening is that when you put the lever in the right position for a given gear, the gearbox itself is not actually in gear hence no drive. You may have had a worn clutch as well, but that's not related to any of these symptoms you describe where it has no drive at all.
