Hi: my 2003 996 Turbo has done 70,000 and I'm contemplating a total rebuild. Any idea how much I should budget and any recommendations?
Thanks
Graham

The go to specialists are Hartech

Whats the rebuild for? I assume nobody would spend circa £10k on an engine rebuild unless something was wrong.

Well she's a keeper and has reached a certain age. I've never done major maintenance so I guess it's time. Nothing is broken but several oil weeps.. so it's a preventive maintenance really..then I hope to drive her more. Much more

I'm not sure Hartech are really the go to for these engines in the same way as they are for the more common engine from the standard cars. I do know you can get some modern oil additives these days which are designed to help improve tiring seals and gaskets. If it really is just weeping a bit then why rebuild it. Perhaps try some of these additives first.

I appreciate that ‘rebuild’ means different things to different people, but it doesn’t sound like your car needs a rebuild in the traditional sense.

More like re-seal in a few different areas, which is something I’d expect any good specialist to be able to do.

Thanks. Well I've definitely decided to have the engine out and stripped so it's a question of choosing the right specialist..

Nine Excellence in Horley, near Gatwick. This is their bread and butter. My engine came out recently for a big overhaul of coolant hoses, brake lines and turbos refurbed. Give Ken or Adam a call.

VERY few Metzger engines have needed a rebuild. I would just get someone to seal up any leaks and get back at it.

I will email you some details when I get a moment.

As Caddyshack said the engine itself is very robust and may not need opening up unless you have a specific issue or are looking at big power upgrades which require internal component upgrades.

At your age and mileage the money may be better spent on refurbing both turbos (expensive if required), refreshing corroded / leaking lines and fasteners that are better accessed with the engine removed and a major service including spark plugs, all fluids and all filters.

Needing a rebuild at only 70k ?? One would hope not !!

Unless it's been on a race track most of its life.

It's a Porsche 996, the whole car is unbelievably fragile.

This was quite interesting to read:

https://www.revolution-porsche.co.uk/buyers-guides...

It'll need a restoration by now, let alone an engine rebuild, worst case scenario.

Corrosion of exhaust nuts etc is a funny one.

A friend worked at a fancy 911 turbo a few years ago, not sure exactly which model, but to be fair it was a very cool piece of kit. ( needed some suspension parts replaced, hub upright etc after a bump. The aluminium upright was a work of art, and surprisingly cheap )
But all the nuts/bolts on the exhaust manifolds were barely recognisable as nuts and bolts they had corroded that bad. They were still together, but no doubt every one would have needed cut off...if they didn't just fall off.

No they are not, the 996 turbo engine has none of the IMs, bore score or rms issues and the rest of the 996 is pretty solid in my experience of owning one.

I knew someone would bite at that laugh
The turbo engine is more reliable than the N/A, but then the car is double the price.
The rest of the car is amazingly piss poor for such an (originally) expensive piece of kit, they're £15k now for a good reason.
The failures are on a par with a £2k MX5, but with 8x the cost.

Can you point me in the direction of 15k 996Ts, as there are 106 for sale on PH & AT and the cheapest one is 29k?
