Hi peeps

Any thoughts appreciated

Over the weekend my car - 2018 Q5 - developed a temporary knocking from the right / driver-side rear wheel when turning right or, more accurately, when going around roundabouts.

Like a rhythmic tapping or knocking noise. Only on the roundabouts.

Came on from nowhere and lasted three or four roundabouts. We were stopping for lunch already but when we got going again it had stopped. Have tested it since with some roundabouts and vigorous right turns - nothing.

It had a service in the week (oil so nothing wheel related) and an MOT. But it did not come on immediately after any of those.

Any ideas at all?

Thanks vm

Thanks all

It sounded more metal / mechanical and given it was only happening on roundabouts I assumed something suspension related

The brake shim idea was interesting and will look into that but would have thought the noise would have been constant not just on turning?

Will of course take it back to the MOT bay for a check but imagine they will dismiss it based on it no longer happening so wondered if there was a possibility something amiss despite the noise having stopped

Check all your wheel nuts.

I had a car once that had reasonably sought after wheels, and couldn't work out the thud thud noise from the wheels when going around round abouts. Turned out only the locking wheel nuts were tight and the rest of the nuts were loosened off. Scary

Was it quite soon into the journey? With the wheel sizes and low profile tires used these days, the diffs can create quite a thud, especially when cold. I’ve had/driven a few cars that feel like they have a welded diff when doing tight turns on a cold diff, the R8 (which likely had a similar differential setup) was one of them.

My money would be on wheel nuts being loose.

Could have been a stone in the wheel. I had this once, it sounded very mechanical.

Thanks all, appreciate the replies

Just to update I took it back to the MOT bay and they found nothing. Bolts tight, nothing looking amiss.

It has not happened since and there is no unusual behaviour or vibrating.

As mechanical as it sounded, only thing that makes sense is a stone I guess, given how temporary it was.

Cheers
