He then said they were picking him up tomorrow, of course they were lol, to hand over his new car.

I know how it goes down, " It is X amount to diagnose, could be Y amount to fix, might have other issues at 6 years old, time to change it " Basically scaring them, politely, into it. " best not drive it, we will send a truck to collect it " Customer service innit biglaugh
My only experience is as a customer, but I've never heard of service and sales deparments co-operating like that. I thought they generally hated each other?
Hate is not the word, but like any corparate company, emplyoyees are just numbers on payrolls, to do the job they are paid for, and these days cooperation between departments is pretty much a thing of the past.

That said, the core business is selling cars, if they do not sell cars the service department have no work, and they do not like working on old oily cars, so inadvertently work together.

In the case I have mentioned, I do not think they have even seen the car, if they had, and advised not to drive, it would have been left at the dealership for repair or trade in, they just sent me to pick it up, and arranged to pick up the customer next day, once they had assessed the part ex price.

I keep repeating on these threads, once your car is out of warranty, the main agent is not the place to take it, for service, for mot, for anything, hourly rates are excessive,Parts prices excessive too, they are slow to do things, and will quote telephone numbers for major repair work, that they do not want to do.

For mot, they will add a long list of BS advisories to a fail, or to a pass on ageing cars, surface rust on components, arches, sills etc, anything that makes the car seem far worse than it is.

If you book your car in for service and mot, they will do as you ask, service it, charge you, then mot the car, and fail it if needs be, add some BS advisories if they can, I have bought part ex cars where this has happened, often with new brake discs all round, as advised during the service, and failing the mot.

For instance, my 2023 Iveco is serviced at half the recommended interval, I buy the parts from the Iveco dealership that did the main 30k service, for less than half the price on the invoice for the 30k service.

Customer service extends to buying a car, after that they will look for any way out of warranty claims, and once out of warranty try and persuade you into a new car one way or another. Selling cars, not customer service, is the core business.
