Hi I've got a 2001 Astra 1.6 16 valve with around 38k on the clock.

It's going in for an mot in a couple of months and as it hasn't had a cambelt done yet I thought I may as well ask my mechanic to change it and the tensioners, as Vauxhall say every 4yrs/40k. I've heard that changing the waterpump at the same time is a good idea.

Was wondering is anybody could say if this is indeed a good idea? Any advice specifically on my car would be much appreciated, or just general advice would be good too. Also the guy is an independent and usually does a service and mot for around £120 on my dad's zafira with pick up and drop off, so was wondering what sort of price to expect for this?

(my dad doesn't like to ask the price as he trusts the guy and has used him for years, but I just want a rough idea so I know how much to expect from the bill.)

Thanks guys.

Yes most people generally change the water pump at the same time as to change it at a later date the cambelt has to be removed and the pump only costs about £30 anyway.

at a guess total parts for pump and cambelt change about #70 quid add your labour on top for a price

have a look at vxon - quite a good forum for vauxhalls
