Oh ok!! I shall give the friendly garage a call tomorrow and see when I can book it in to be replaced. The whole reason I didn't replace the belt or at least investigate doing it myself is because I am super busy at the moment.Having a pulley detonate and taking a new belt with it, whilst 400 miles from home is just something that would tug.
To be honest, cant complain. The car has been dirt cheap (read: maintenance free) since I bought it! By far the cheapest car I have ever had

Do they make the engine vibrate when on the way out? My 9000 vibrates like the bearings are shot some days, yet is smooth as silk on others and it started doing this all of a sudden for no obvious reason. When it's bad even the wing mirrors are vibrating. I've checked everything but can't find a fault, even the mot tester can't find a fault.
Sounds like either a misfire or something causing severe cycle-to-cycle variation. How's the fuel supplied in that engine? If it's EFI and assuming it's batch injected then it could be something silly like the FI starting up in a random phase relative to the engine cycle, and some minor fault making it more sensitive to the fuel timing than normal. Or that could be complete bs and it's just a loose plug lead.
