Hello folks,

The rear view mirror, along with the indicator / washer stalks are the worst tactile / designed pieces in the car.

There is nothing I can do about the stalks until Tony Hall sorts something out wink but I was wondering if I could simply swap the mirror for a nicer one. I really liked the oval one in my E46 M3, wondering if I could just source one of those and swap?

Has anyone done this, or has the heat finally got to me?

Cheers

Kris

Kris,

I swapped the normal manual rear view mirror in my 07 MY Vantage for the Auto-Dimming mirror. It's a much better design and function and the wiring is already in place. An easy swap with 'plug & play'.

Sarah Maynard makes covers for the indicator stalks. They do make them a much more tactile experience as there are machined surfaces where your fingers touch them. Very happy with mine, but they are covers only, not whole stalks.

Can this be done in a DB9? Did you do this yourself or via a dealer?

Don't have my car with me I'm afraid, though I have posted pics before... There are a few pictures which don't really show them off on her page: http://www.sarahmaynard.com/drivers-collection

If the auto mirror was an option on the MY DB9 (a dealer can advise) then the wiring and plug will be in place. It's a simple 5 min DIY job. I bought my mirror on eBay, they do come up occasionally.

Mel - thanks for this, do you happen to know how one "plug and plays"?

Many Thanks

The auto-dimming mirror comes with wires and a plug attached. There will also be a plug clipped on the side of the driver side map light. This (unused) plug was wrapped in foam. Simply plug the 2 together. The plugs are a unique design and there are no others there so you can't get it wrong.

Really simple!! smile

Does the in-place plug for the mirror look like this (black with red face, green/orange/black wires)? Found this when changing the map lights, didn't know what it was for.

Kris, please let us know if you find a mirror and get this done. I'd like to do it too. Part numbers would help, especially if Ford or Volvo.

No problem, will do a little "how to" guide for the wiki if it's simple enough, if it's more complicated you'll see my tale of woe unfold here too wink

I did it. Easily. Trust me, it's simple!!!
Just make sure your car had auto-dimming mirror as an option. Then the wiring will be in place! HWM Parts dealer are very helpful and can answer this question and also give you a quote on an auto-dimming mirror. smile

Is the Garage door opener completely self contained in the mirror ? (my 997 had the transmitter in the front grill)
I have it on mine but if i get another one it is a must have option but wondered if it could be easily retrofitted.

Same question here: can the auto-dim mirror easily be replaced bu auto-dim plus Homelink?

Any pics of the Homelink mirror?

TIA!

I bought my auto-dimming mirror in eBay from somebody who swapped it for one with a garage door opener. So I assume it's a simple retro-fit and it's self contained. But a parts manager could confirm this.

The auto-dimming mirror is more oval in shape and has a small infra red sensor at the bottom rather than the little plastic lever behind the mirror.
