Not all OBD readers are the same and of course you can pay a lot of money for a cheap unit.
One unit I can recommend is the OBD link MX.
It can communicate with the high speed and low speed Canbus of the engine and body modules and works with the main Android and Apple programs.
It also can be left plugged in as it efficiently sleeps when not in use.
There are deals online ranging from expensive to not too bad. I think it is worth the extra compared to some. Remember you are plugging into expensive and sensative equipment.
