I like the wagons (I've got a MY99). Servicing isn't cheap (the cheaper dealers are around £400 for a major service and £200 for a minor one). The MY96 brakes aren't much good and many people upgrade to 4 pots at the front which will cost you around £500 I guess.

Very reliable if looked after. Sure they're thirsty and the interior looks like a 1980's taxi but it's worth it for the performance. If you're getting a MY96 then the depreciation has all worked in your favour so no worries there.

The boot in the wagon isn't that big so make sure your pram and all that clobber actually fits.

No contest at all for Turbo vs Sport - you know which you want........

For insurance - Tuffer's thread to Scoobynet will tell you everything you need to know about how a bit of legwork can pay off.

Guess what I drive...

Used to have an MY00 - bought new. Did 45K miles no problems. Bought a new shape MY01 - with a few mods . This has done nearly 40K miles.

Neither suffered any major problems - only had the normal servicing and I also managed to include several track days (in both cars) including driving down to Nurburgring and Lloret De Mar for the Catalunya Rally last year.

Can't think of too many other cars I could have done this in and had so much fun

Downsides? Interior isn't upto BMW standards, but that said, it is very comfortable (great seats) and nothing has fallen off or stopped working. Radio isn't great, but that's easily solved. Certainly can drink petrol, the worst (best?) was 9 mpg on a track day. On the motorway at sensible cruising speeds, you can easily get low 30s - so not too bad.

Insurance varies greatly, shop around. Be prepared to fit a Cat 1 alarm and tracking device (if they are not already fitted). I've been with Greenlight for the last two years - they are very good as they understand the cars (which most insurers don't).

Would I recommend one? Yes

Check out Scoobynet and use the search option as you will find a lot of useful info on there.

Clutches are expensive!

On my old Turbo 2000, a new clutch with housing extra was £900 at a main dealer. Just changing the clutch & bearing is £500, again main dealer prices.

Just put a new ford clutch and bearing in an escort cosworth price £110.
