Posted this earlier on the wrong thread…

I've been logging misfires over the last few months, out of interest more than anything else, and this is what it's thrown up.

Distance covered = 3,000 miles. Car = 325i, N53.

Cylinder 1, + 25
Cylinder 2, +76
Cylinder 3, +27
Cylinder 4, +119
Cylinder 5, +424
Cylinder 6, +60

Are there any misfire gurus out there who can tell me whether this looks normal or abnormal? Particularly Cylinder 5. Ta
What did you use to log this? If this is the equivalent of the smooth running test on ISTA then you want the values to all be similar, so cyl 5 looks way off. Is the car throwing a cyl 5 misfire code?

Lifetime misfires via Bimmerlink. It’s the change over the last 3,000 miles. No misfire codes (never had any in fact).

Update...

All plugs are a bit coked up but cylinder 6 is soaked in oil. So, valve cover gasket time?

I've got new plugs so will fit now to see if it makes a difference.

Edited to add: new plugs are in, car is running *much* better.

Presumably I now need to do the valve cover gaskets to stop it recurring...

(On this, I really need INPA to relearn the valvetronic position, right? Some claim you don't but I think maybe they've just been lucky?)

When I did my valve cover gasket, I didn't do any valvetronic-ness, I took it off, and put it back on, and it all lined up exactly right. YMMV.
If you're going to the trouble of getting the valve cover off, I'd recommend the eccentric shaft sensor, it's an extra 5 mins work and I got a VDO one (bmw logo ground off!) for less than £50. Allegedly these fail without codes showing, so why wouldn't you.
I can't tell you how I got the valve cover out...it was like houdini! You may just find exactly the right angle to slip it out at...or struggle for ages, it's one of those.

I've also been trying to guess the plastic plug, but can't think of anything.

Glad the plugs have sorted it.

As zippy said, I just unwound the valvetronic motor when I did a valvetronic gasket on mine, then I did it back up. Seems fine and hasn’t changed how it behaves.

That’s how I moved the motor on my 130i and it was fine afterwards.

Sounds like it's worth a go then. Will start rounding up parts.

Other than the gaskets, bolts, ESS, any other "while you're in there" jobs?

I guess checking the chain doesn't look knackered and nothing is about to fall apart...

A part number query actually...

The ESS gasket should be 11127528242. However some of the parts coming up for this are described as "Crankcase Ventilation Gasket" with fitting position "from cylinder head cover to oil separator":

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/405080128110

Is this not the right part?

Looks mislabelled, but that’s the one. ML have it listed correctly there:

https://www.mlperformance.co.uk/products/genuine-b...

Mines back with a new bearing in. I sent it to be fixed with a good quality bearing and a whole used hub and driveshaft combo. They did the bearing in my existing bits, which I prefer honestly. It’s silent, and feels great. That said I need a new rear Michelin PS5, as one has a screw in it right near the shoulder. Bugger.

One for the N53 crowd, do your fuel pumps prime on unlocking the car? I'm sure mine always did this before. but lately I've not noticed it at all. I've no other symptoms.

Yep, mine does and believe they should do. Only time it doesn't is if I've recently unlocked and relocked. Haven't noticed it not priming in any other scenarios.

Sounds like I'd better get the laptop out then. I did reset the steering lock counter in Ista the other week, which is roughly when I noticed no priming. But I'd done nothing else except that whille "plugged in" so I'm not sure they're related.

Edit: seems like the fault is with my ears. I parked the car in our car port for the first time in ages, unlocked it 20 minutes later and heard the fuel pump prime. It seems odd I couldn't hear it even standing close to the car when it was parked in the open. But the sound clearly carries badly. laugh

I was going to say if the pump wasn’t working you’d know. You’d be pissed offhand sat at the side of the road with a dead car. hehe

Washed the E91 for the first time in months.

This happened:

As some of you might recall from recent posts on these tailgate roundels, I did get a new OEM one last year as the original was starting to look a bit cack. However, now that I know they're NLA, and given that the rest of the bodywork is starting to show signs of its age, I'm tempted to just araldite on the old one for now and keep the new one for some indeterminate point in the future.

If I get rid or the car dies before it goes on, then I can sell the new OEM roundel on for £millions and retire abroad hehe

A 14 year old BMW that’s been written off for that? No chance.
