I'm looking at a 2014 325i, 64k miles very well spec'ed manual gearbox, sunroof, hk stereo etc. Full BMW service history. Are the manuals ok or is the preference for auto? Thinking resale value as well. Thanks for any advice

Auto is mainstream, manual is a very enjoyable niche.

If anything resale value will be stronger. The relative rarity and demand from more enthusiastic drivers tends to support prices once they get past the initial steep depreciation curve. You only need to look at the E90/E91 market to see the prices of manual 335i holding up well.

manual is horrendous in the f30 guise, the ZF8 auto gearbox is much better suited

No chance of getting a 340, stretching as it is and i'm in Ireland so thanks to brexit we can't import from the UK any more.

A bit dramatic, no?

I've driven a few manual F30s, no issues with them at all. And I say that as the owner of an F31 with a ZF8. OP as mentioned the resale value will probably be quite strong with one of those, so if you like it then go for it.
