E36 mileage display problem solved

I'm posting this because I'm aware its a common problem on E36's for the bottom half of the mileage display digits to dissappear either intermittently or permanently and there appears to be nothing in the archive about it. Anyway, it happened on mine so I did some net trawling to find the fix and came across this.

As you can see there are two possible causes either bulb filament or contacts. The way to determine which one your's is, is to see if, when the mileage display dissappears its still being displayed but very dimly (try looking at night) or if it has gone altogether. Mine was the latter and so I had a contact issue.
Took the dash appart this afternoon and followed the instructions on the link. Its a bit daunting taking your cluster to bits but the actual job is pretty straight forward, if a little fiddly. 20 minutes, all done, back in and working now.
Anyway, hopefully some of you will find this of use.
