Looking for a first bike, I’m quite torn between something low key and this, assuming I have patience to defer a purchase as my theory isn’t booked until august. CBT next week.

All things being equal, living in Leeds which has some quite active theft gangs. Will I be relieved quicker of a ktm than I would something more boring looking? Ninja cbr or mt-03 etc

Try some insurance quotes. That should tell you which gets stolen most.

Yeah, I ran a few l, there was about £300-440 range from 125 to ninja 400 range... maybe that tells me that there isn’t much in it.

Which part of Leeds do you live in? I'm from Leeds originally and there are some area's known for theft (Harehills, Crossgates, Woodhouse) a lot more than others (Alwoodley, Scarcroft etc).

I would take a layered approach to security, disc locks, chain including a padlock (a decent one) and a cover. If you invest in a decent chain (almax etc), you'll use it on all your bikes over the next however many years, so they do pay for themselves.

Regarding the bike choice, I'd advise getting the bike you want as you'll have more fun riding it and the grin factor. I've heard lots of positive things about the 390 Dukes, they look an amazing bike!

I think I’m in agreement about getting the one I want. Just need to find one, try it for size and pass test etc.

I frequent east Leeds, crossgates in fact, the local taxi drivers know some of those lads who got the banning order prohibiting them touching any vehicles for years and were telling me they were bragging about being back at it almost immediately at the time.

A friend lives in seacroft and his street is used as a cut through for the stolen bikes so it’s not hard to see how prolific it is.

It’s harder than I expected to track down a local new one so will see what’s out there as I progress. I don’t know what my chances of test rides will be on multiple, time will tell...

My son bought an ex demo KTM 390 from Craig's in Dewsbury, could not get a test ride as he had just passed his test which was fair enough. He is very happy with it, just get the comfort seat for it, the original is a plank.
We also live in Leeds , as the bike is for fun only it doesn't get parked up unless it is in our garage or we have stopped for a break and are stood near it.
Parking any bike in Leeds has its risks, just like any other town/city.

Wise words. Thanks

Dewsbury is the nearest retail one. Does low Supply keep values strong I wonder.

Is the fan being intermittently on and noisy an issue for your son as seen in some reviews?

Unfortunately if the fkers want it, they'll have it.

Buy the bike you want, not the one you think no one else wants. Just do your best to hide it, cover it, lock it, watch it, track it and insure it.

Also 390 Duke is the one sub-600cc bike I'd want so yeah, go for a 17-plate onwards one with the TFT dash and better build quality.

I work in Glasgow a lot, they don’t even seem to lock them up sometimes up there, such is the difference in theft rate.

Ach well, they do get their share of st weather to make up for it!

Me too, or an RC390. And yeah for the Duke you definitely want the jazzy dash imho.

Have a look at the husky 401 svartpilen/vitpilen. It's essentially the same bike but tarted up. The looks are a bit marmite, but I've seen new ones going for some steep discounts if you like them. I had a day on one a few months back, they're great fun, just like a big bmx.

No idea on the theft issue, it's definitely area specific.

He has never mentioned the fan in any way, I will ask him tonight when I finish work.

I`ve had mine since new and the fan isn`t a problem noise wise, although I`ve usually got ear plugs in as wind noise at 70 is more of an issue. Hence fitting a screen. The LCD display screens are the biggest problem I`m on my 3rd now, they mist up and condensation drips down inside.

Lol thanks for the info, I love marmite but I’m not sure about that!

I appreciate the feedback. They certainly tick the right boxes and are easy on the eye.

I’d have rushed into buying something by now but for the fact I can’t do much until after the theory in august...

I notice BMW give lessons thrown in when taking up their pcp deal on a 310 gs or 310 r...

Are these bikes going to be inadequate very quickly?

Is there a reason the promo videos have a woman on them !?

Son says he has only noticed fan coming on in traffic, you can hear it but seems to be no louder than other bikes.

Thats worrying about the LCD screen, we noticed a tiny bit of condensation in the screen the other day which has since disappeared.Surely if they keep having to replace them under warranty they would find the problem and uprate the screen.

Feel free to save my wallet and ignore this, but if you can't, any chance you can point me in the direction of the steep discounts?
