Road charging for bikes
Discussion
Big news on the other forums, but are they going to stick black boxes in bikes as well???
I haven't heard of an alarm fitted to a bike that doesnt break down at some point... if i get a black box i might get a bit enthusiastic with a jet washer of course when it breaks i'll probably get fined or put in jail so on second thoughts
I won't beat around the bus... I speed a lot more on the bike than in the car, i really don't like the idea of having one of those boxes fitted to a bike...

Frightening! As per timmartin, I probably spend more time on the wrong side of the speed limit when on the bike. Likewise, I also do not want the government to know every time I travel where I go, how long I take and which route I use.
I think feelings on this, both in the car world and in the bike world, are running strong enough that it’ll only take one very small coordinated gesture for the message to get through that this will not be allowed to happen. As per fuel protests a few years ago.

Do you think they would be able to tell if you are only riding on 1 wheel
Yer they put the boxes somewhere near the front of the bike and add a tilt sensor.. hey presto instant fine for lifting the front wheel past 5 deg say. More than possible to do!
I signed the petition against road charging whatever difference that actually makes.
I've not read anything about this to date, but it sounds entirely possible given the nanny culture inflicted on the general populace these days by Billy Liar and chums. Quite how much further things will slide if/when Gordy gets the helm remains to be seen, but I can only see things becoming worse. I can't wait to see the back of these s and hope that they haven't ed things up to such an extent, that they're irrecoverable by the time they go. Sorry for the rant all, but if it's not something like this, there'll be yet another thinly-veiled taxation scheme that further intrudes on one's passions and freedoms along very soon.

Where the hell would they put it?
It's not going to be a small box (remember SatNav GPS receivers don't transmit anything like as these devices would need to), there isn't enough room under many seats, and on a naked bike there's the 'danger' of them getting soaked with water and being ruined.

Had a good look at any major road surface recently? There are rather a LOT of inductive loop sensors (in every lane), rather too frequently placed to be just for 'traffic flow monitoring' (which in any case is what all the cameras were allegedly for).
Mark my words, the technology is already in place and any day soon there'll be an announcement that as of 0100 hours it's all active (if it isn't already, and you can bet they're trialling it to the n'th degree), so stand in line for your black box or have your vehicle confiscated...
The box will be a transponder as used on planes to ID them to air traffic control: every time you go over an inductive loop it triggers the transponder to transmit its code (eg your reg number) and bingo, more shekels for Blair and a fine for you if you're 1mph over. No GPS needed, box the size of a fag packet would do it.
I don't think it's entirely down to Police cutbacks that there are no traffic cars about, nor that their claim to be removing Scameras is due to them being ineffective. No, the real shit is coming, and phucking soon.
And for those who think that there should be more vandalism of Gatsos, you'd better start buying in shape charges to deal with those inductive loops...

If they try it then I'll be up in arms...
They'll be running for their lives - this country has had too much meddling. No way this will happen. They tried it on with back door environmentalism but that is starting to fall apart.
It's the new poll tax isnt it.
Brown is just a complete muppet in my view with his way of doing things!!

Has there been any suggestion of them being fitted to bikes or are we just getting ourselves in a good flap before settling down and deciding which home made jam to make before this weeks WI meeting?
If they are fitted in cars; which is looking more and more likely, then it is only a matter of time before they are fitted to bikes.
Even if the government don't make them mandatory, I suspect they will become more and more popular with insurance companies; 3 points on licence = black box or no insurance!
Which is why people need to take a stand now before it is to late. As with all these things it happens little by little and before you know it.
Hope all of you have signed the petition against road pricing.
