I've had the gauze out of mine for 15 years. Helps with breathing

I must admit I wasn’t sure why the AFM needs gauze when there’s a filter at the nose end

Does the airflow need a disturbance to get an accurate air mass reading? I expect it's just the way the meter is manufactured.
