Every now and again when the car has been stood up for a few days and I go to start it I get a very faint whine from what sounds like the fuel pump after a few seconds it fades away , has anyone else experienced this ? Is it normal or should I mention it to Peninsiula when it goes in for service next week. Thanks

Corin,

The bit that I find worrying is the "every now and again" one for my car does this every time you turn the ignition off - which is perfectly normal. In fact you should always wait a couple of seconds with the ignition on before actually starting the car.
Of course, all this is only valid if we are talking about the same thing, but the way you describe it is pretty clear.

Yes, mine also does this for a few seconds when I turn the ignition on. I presume it's the pump priming.

You should hear the fuel pump prime (About 3 seconds of electronic whine from the rear left of the car) each time you turn on the ignition to start the car (it won't make a noise if the car is immobilised).

However, if the noise is something else from the same area it could be the fuel tank pressurising/depressurising. I don't think this is a problem, some cars do it more than others. Some people even get 'bangs' from their tank which sound a little scarey until you know what it is. The only thing I know which may affect this is the carbon cannister, located behind the front grille - part of the emission control system.

When you turn the ignition OFF the idle control stepper motor winds out which causes a buzzing noise at the back of the engine bay for about a second, this is normal and completely different to the noise from the fuel pump (at the rear of the car) when you turn the ignition on.
