Who buys modern day MGs?

On rare occasion I spot one of these in the wild. Usually it'll be the SUV variant.



Are they are better in any way than the Korean opposition?

Who buys these? What's the draw (7 year warranty perhaps)? Is it just MG fanboys?

I wish I knew the answer. They are no different looking than every other SUV but perhaps pensioners who remember tinkering with their MGA's & MGB's buy them thinking they are still buying an MG proper.
Bet they get slobbered over at MG Owners Club meets though just like MG Maestros etc did.

Some will be the EV version which seems to be remarkably cheap for an EV SUV.

I used to think they were lunatic Geralds who owned 40 MGs in a row since their first company car in 1982, but recently the people driving them seem to be young.

I just don't understand why you wouldn't buy a Peugeot/Citroen/Ford/Hyundai/Kia instead.

I rather someone did buy them, as it means the MG name survives, I know it's not the MG it once was but as they progress and get better, they may look at the history books and try to replicate what was once before.

There was a big MG Club stand full entirely of the modern (Chinese) cars at the BTCC a couple of years ago, which did seem a little odd.

The MG3 is quite a cheap and cheerful little thing and very good value for money. They ruined it with an ugly face-lift though.

Everyone, I see loads every single day, 7 year warentee, 0% PCP and fixed amounts, I think that 4X4 thing is £279 a month

The people buying them are the people who used to buy Kia’s or fords, or Vauxhall’s, or a Fiat everyday people who don’t really care about cars but fancy something new, may not be better than a Kia but a Kia is just a car. Stops and goes.

They are actually quite decent cars. White goods but so are so many other brands

Lots of young people getting a 3 as a first car, dirt cheap at £199 a month, etc.

Ended up with a 6 as a rental car a few years ago. I have tried to block out the memories but what stood out were decent diesel engine but the worst car I have ever driven in every other way. Didn't have intermittent wipers amongst many other failings. Grossly uncomfortable. 1980s digital clock.

Yep they're cheap and have a reasonable interior and a 7 year warranty. For a lot of people, that's enough

The upcoming EV coupé does look interesting.

My mum got an MG SUV thingy on Motability, as she knows nothing about cars I kind of understand why she got it, but then she did ignore my recommendation of a Mazda CX-5 that was also on the Motability list.
It may be an unfair comparison against my 6 cyl derv with a ZF8 auto, but the engine & gearbox is shockingly bad, like comically bad. It is nice and big inside but when I read up on them it originally failed the Euro Ncap but after fitting an electronic aid it squeaked a 3 star rating.
So its slow, horrid to drive, not very economical and not a place you want to have a crash, but its cheap and big. So old women on a budget will buy them.

I think you have to be at least 60. Wear beige trousers, checked shirts, pullover and wear gold rimmed glasses. Wife called Margaret. Live in a bungalow. Washes the car every Sunday.

Probably would be buying a Rover if they still made them. Went to Hyundai via Kia but now want something 'British' and with a good badge.

Better looking than small German SUV's as are Korean makes like Kia and Hyundai and better value than many out there.
With a 7 Yr warranty it shows they have commitment.
Will likely still be going long after other far more expensive makes have died.

It’s the price. Like FSO, Proton, even and Lada before them, it’s a new car for those who are scared of second hand, or just like the perception of “something for nothing”. When slightly used, ironically, they are almost for nothing.

I once read a review of the 6 (no longer made I think) and recall it saying that it was pretty good fun to drive. Bet it feels awfully cheap inside though.

I also recall that the 3 was supposed to be a bit of a laugh.

A while ago one of our company pool cars was one of those SUVs. The interior is a sort of crayola Porsche Cayenne rip off - the general derivativeness of the car really stood out. By the end of my time with it I’d started to doubt whether anything was real. The reversing camera was sow low res I wasn’t totally sure it wasn’t an animated gif.

My mum and dad bought one, it was cheap and they had it for ages and it never gave any trouble, the interior wasnt much cop but it went fairly well and did its job, they replaced it with a new Qashqai and love that. My dad also has an MG ZT 190 which is basically as new, must be one of the best left.

I'd agree if they made something interesting, but in a market flooded with amazingly competent small hatchbacks and small 4x4s, what's their SP other than a badge? None that I can see. Like Saab before them they should've been confined to the history books really.
