Really, really basic question

I feel stupid for asking this, but I can't get my late father's kit car which has a 1.8 MGB engine into reverse.

This could be to do with the fact that I don't know where reverse is on the gate (nothing is marked), and whether I have to push the gear stick down, pull it up, shake it all about ....

You guys must know. Please .....
