I was Just wondering, since I currently own a Jag (old series 3 XJ6)as my 4 seater runabout, and I'm currently toying with the idea of buying a facelift XJS 4.0L Convertible for it's touring prowess.
I've always wondered why a manufacturer of such long-standing and pedigree as Jaguar has never had it's own forum on pistonheads (even if it has fallen short of it's sporting pedigree of late).
Is it perhaps because nobody on here has one?
If on the other hand there are people with experience of Jag ownership, the I'd like to hear from them.
In particular about the aforementioned XJS, and also the XK8 which is a car I'll be definately looking at in the future.

Maybe Ted could change the title so instead of just being the Aston Martin forum it would be "Aston Martin & Jaguar" ??

£20K's a little rich for my blood at the moment(£15 tops I'm afraid).
Besides I've always promised myself an XJS and a late galvanised one seems to make sense.
Does the XK8 have a Galvanised body too?

Yerrs, I've A Jag (hanging my head in shame) S-type 4.2 (with all the bells and whistles, what a load of junk!!!!) WHEN it runs it's luvverly, a dream to drive, seems to have automatic numpty outside-laner-remover, BUT more often than not its in the workshop.....(and always for 10 days or 2 weeks FFS!)
7 months (and only 13500km instead of 35Kkm) and following probs (13x in the workshop to date), the car is a liability, it's lost me over twenty thousand Euros in lost business as it ALWAYS breaks down when I want to visit a customer.
ome of the most serious faulty as follows:
new wiper moter after 500kms
all electrics failed after 1500km
S-Type wheel wobble (problem known for 3 YEARS at Jag!)
replaced park distance control at 1500km
replaced automatic lights switching gear at 1500km
steering wheel and seat didn't move on memory after 15 attempts now the seat moves, the wheel STILL doesn't go to the correct position
steering column replaced to try to get the wheeel to "remember"
gearbox replaced due to whiplash-causing slam on acceleration from standing, still the same after replacement.
New engine gearbox data downloaded
4 cm of water in the bootwell drowning all electrics, a mistake that ALL S-types have and although the factory has known of this for 3 YEARS, and NOTHING done to remedy a manufacturing fault!!!! I found the fault, Jaguar couldn't!!!!
Hydraulic leak, replaced steering box (needlessly), car returned, leaking MORE than ever before, found it was the gearbox connections BUT took them 2 weeks to get the parts!!! simple hydraulic connection FFS!
Another Jag? VERY doubtfull... I wanted to fly the flag in Germany as a Brit, but this car is the best advert for all that Britain gets wrong!!!!
They've had my ultimatum now (replace or court case) for a month and haven't yet had the civility to reply!!!!

Thanks for the commiserations, I do hope that they get their act together, as the jag is rare in Germany and it does turn a few heads. And as I said WHEN it runs it's a dream.........
If they don't get it sorted it's back to the Teutons I'm afraid (RS6, S4 or another porker, no pimp-cars for me)

In the process of trading my '64 E-type for a new Tuscan. Also had a 4.2 E and a 1992 facelift XJS from new for a couple of years.
My XJS was a tin top. Lovely car once I'd persuaded the dealer to hang the doors properly to stop the rain pouring in! A very refined car, perfect for long journeys, very comfortable and plenty of poke. I never had any mechanical problems in 82k miles, all the niggles were minor like the doors and were sorted early. Traded it in Jan 95 for a new Range Rover, the build quality and reliability of which made the Jag look a beacon of excellence in comparison.

I've had X300s for the past few years as stable mates for a TVR Griffith. The first a 1994 4.0 Sport gave me no trouble at all, did 100,000 miles all over Europe, an excellent car. Then I traded it in for an XJR-6, and I've just spent a year and a lot of cash getting it right. But when the big straight 6 XJR is on song it's a real beauty, if a little thirsty.

Yeah, I've been on the Jag-Lovers forum. I find it to be very American oriented (which feels odd for a British car) and not at all in the same vein as Pistonheads.
Besides I'm sure Ted wouldn't want us going elsewhere for our daily fix.
Ran an XJS coupe for 3 years as my only car. 1990 model, and I got it with 3,000 on the clock.
Sold it with 96,000 miles and in that time only things that went wrong were:-
passenger cabin fans - these run all the time that you have the air/con or heating on - I think I had 3 replaced under warranty 'cos I thought they were noisy!
Passenger window 'stuck' once.
Umm, that's it I think!
Still wish I had it to be honest - something about them!
If you do get one, have fun.

By the way, there is an independent dealer near me which usually has quite a few XJS's - If you are anywhere near Herts/Beds then they are not too far from you and might be worth a vist - Chiltern Cars of Bovingdon (I think)
