I posted earlier about tracking mis-match (i.e delviered by tracking number, but not delivered by ebay tracking) - i did get paid after 14 days without chasing. The item still shows as undelivered on the ebay site.

Oddly the guy i sent the item to also collected stuff, later listed, I sold (breakable glass, i didn't offer the option to post) and said he had no problems with the delivery and wasn't aware I hadn't been paid by ebay.

I have now sold some other items and made sure I use the ebay postage label printing service, rather than buying postage at the post office. This seems to integrate much better with ebay's tracking service and payment is happening 2 days after delivery. Also with the added benefit that postage comes out from my "on hold" funds rather than paid separately. Logical I suppose and pretty easy now I am used to it.

I have the opposite - have now sold 3 items under the new system, all items posted via RM tracked 48 bought independently of eBay, tracking info put into ebay, all funds received after 2 days as per eBay's T&Cs.

Why would you buy it independently?

I've used eBay postage ever since it came out. They gives a huge range of options. It's quick and there's no chance of mis-entering a tracking number

It seems to work very well

Before eBay changed their 'fees', I have previously looked into using eBay postage - Royal Mail - but their prices seemed to be higher than direct to RM and also I can't arrange a collection via eBay whereas I can via RM direct. Saves me a trip to the post office!

Really? That's not my experience. The eBay prices for Royal Mail postage is identical to RM's own prices, and for couriers eBay is often cheaper than the courier's own prices.

That is true, though, and if that is something beneficial to you then that's reason enough to go direct

From what I've seen the ebay prices match the retail prices - I didn't know about the differences in collection options etc though.

My main reason for going direct is a little FU to ebay though. They will be making money on the postage, and given how much they try to dick about private sellers I feel like giving them a little bit back hehe

Just sold my first item since the changes.

£3.51 + £0.86 BPF

To send it tracked is £2.70 (standard 2nd class as large letter under 100g is £1.55) I would make less than £1.

Standard 2nd class it is. I wouldnt mind its only a set of ear plugs that I've about 400 left now i put on rather than binning them.

Have to wait till March 12th for the funds
I'd be tempted to sell them in packs of 10 or whatever, as your postage costs are going to be smaller per-item.
Did you advertise it as free postage? Sound like you did, so that's 'user error' rather than anything against eBay.
It's always free postage so I dont pay fees on it as at one point they took money for that also. No user error im happy to wait for the money its pittance after all for something id rather not bin

Another little trap I fell into today.

Sold a microwave oven for collection only. Buyer paid eBay this morning and he collected it this afternoon. Great.

I go to mark the item as 'collected' but it won't let me. I need a 6 digit code from the buyer, and until I get one, eBay are keeping the money. If the buyer decides he CBA to send me the code it appears I'm screwed. Well done eBay.

It’s been like this for at least a couple of years.

As a seller I like the way it works as it provides proof that the buyer has collected the item.

But only if the buyer bothers to send you the magic number so you get paid. I wonder what happens to the money if they never do? Back to the buyer I suppose. It's a fraudster's charter.

I think eBay worked much better 15+ years ago. Now it's so complicated I can barely understand it.

They wouldn’t normally need to send you the number.

What should happen is that when they come and collect, you either scan the QR code on their phone or ask them for their 6-digit collect code and type this in your phone to confirm the sale is completed.

It’s a much better system than before where you were in fear of PayPal payments being reversed by dishonest buyers so frequently were asked for cash on collection.

I put on my collection only listings if they can’t provide a collection code they don’t get the item I also message them before to make it clear they will be going home empty handed if they forget …

I sold an item for collection only last week, before I had chance to get the code the buyer marked it as collected and left feedback so could not generate the collection code, I was worried about the money clearing but it showed as collected in my eBay and the funds were available in an hour.

I didn't know I needed a 6 digit number until after he'd gone and I went to mark the item as collected. It says 'Funds pending – awaiting collection'. If I click on 'Confirm collection' I get:

There is no confirmation e-mail = dead end. I sent him a polite request for the number but no reply yet. Luckily I have his phone number because he called to arrange a collection time so will phone hm next week.

Result: I have a load of admin and might have lost the money. If he'd just paid cash on collection it would have been so much simpler banghead

After selling on eBay for years I’m about to be scammed for the first time. Sold a brand new sealed iPhone 16 pro max and the buyer is saying the phone won’t turn on, I’ve accepted the return and I’m certain what is coming back to me won’t be the iPhone I sold.

The buyer has over 100 feedback which reassured me as it’s usually accounts that are recently opened that do this sort of thing. Same thing happened to a friend a few weeks ago - sold a new phone and had an old smashed up iPad returned to him. He actually got refunded but was told the buyer wouldn’t be charged either.

Take pics and maybe a video of you unboxing the return... do you have the SN / pictures of the original? Apple maybe able to tell you if it's being used etc.

If the worst happens then I'd call eBay and ask it to be referred to a fraud team.

It's always phones on eBay that this seems to happen with!

I'd just send a letter before action and start a small claims court action for the sake of the fee to put the wind up the buyer of they are scamming you.

You'd be surprised how many buyers suddenly do the right thing when the court claim paper work lands on their doorstep.

I’ve checked on the apple website and it’s not registered yet, but was only received by the buyer today so guessing they could do it tomorrow, that’s if they are not stripping it for parts etc.

Was strange as the buyer bought it and asked me to send to a different address, this was a red flag so I told them to cancel the order, change the address on their eBay account and re order. They were happy to do this so I thought that was a good sign. I still actually have 2x the money in my pending funds as the first cancellation hasn’t gone through yet.

The scammer my friend had used a collection point which seems common for this sort of thing but this order went to a house too. Will update once I get the return.

Just make absolutely sure you stay within the eBay returns process and you’ll be okay.

Just do the eBay process. Film the opening and unboxing if you want too. Ideally from the moment the phone is handed back to you by the courier. You probably won’t need it and if you can’t film from couriers hands to open box they can’t be sure you didn’t remove items and reseal before starting to film.

Don’t listen to the advice about letters before action. Not at this stage.

I had something similar. I stuck to the process. I got paid out for the missing item.

Well, I had my first experience as a buyer buying from a private seller under the new regime

The price of the item is £28.80 and it doesn't mention the Buyer's Fee at all. Offers accepted. So I offer £26, still no mention of Buyer's Fee. Proceed through payment details (as it requires immediate payment if offer accepted) and only then does it say "£26.00 incl. £1.69 Buyer Protection fee" with a little hyperlink which, if you click on it, gives a breakdown saying the seller will receive £24.31 of the £26

You then get to click either the "Edit Offer" or "Send Offer" button.

So there we go. What a pile of crap.
