I've recently reflowed my PS3 after the inevitable YLOD.

As I understand it, the chips inside over heat leading to cracked solder.

If I just use it as a blue ray player only (no GT5 endurance races wink ), will this mean the ps3 chip inside won't get too hot as their not doing much? Meaning the ps3 should last longer than a month or two?

I'm not computer savy, but it makes sense to me unless the chips are required for playing blue rays... If it's going to die again quickly I'll just flog it for spares.

I can't really answer your question, but noticed that the only games that make my fat PS3 fans turn on are LA Noire and Driver SF. scratchchin

I can advise a periodical blow out of the cooling system. I've had mine for about 3 years and 4 months ago it started to shut itself down. I though it had given up the ghost but it did restart.
I took it to work and removed most of the internal parts and gave it a light blow out with a compressed airline (not full blast i might add)and was amazed on how much dust came out of the unit.
The unit had been standing vertical for most of its life and i later found out that its the worst way of standing them, this is due to the intake being open to falling dust.

If you are not the type to strip electronic devices down then just try and blow the vents through just so there is a good stream of air going through the unit to clear the dust.

This solved the problem for me and the unit is now as quiet as it was when i first bought it and now sit it horizontally.

Thanks for that CG! Mine has been horizontal for life, but I will give it a strip down this week and clean it out.

Have a look on the net for stripdown tutorials but most only cover the older models which differ inside quite a bit. I managed to get to the mother board and everything stopped coming out easily so i didn't want to break anything.

I've had one apart before to replace a BD drive, but I'm not going to go to far with it. Just far enough to get a good squirt of Pledge in. yes

I managed to strip it and clean it last night, and throw the motherboard in the oven.

Just was interested to know if just running blue rays would put strain on the computer chips leading them to over heating again (especially now they are weaker). Or if the PS3 as a blue ray player was just that... No computing power needed.

There was a fair bit of dust in there, but nothing significant, t was nearly 5 years old and for the last year it has been standing up.

Peheated the oven to 50oC put in the motherboard for 5 mins, then turned it upto 200oC for 14/15 mins, making sure it didn't start smoking or anything. Let it cool with the fan on and door open for 20 mins.

(for non fan assisted ovens, times may vary).

I honestly didn't think it would work (especially is I'm not electrically minded at all), but a few guys on overclockers have done it to good effect, and it seemed a little safer for me rather than brandishing a heat gun.

I was fairly chuffed when the blue led light came one. Also not really used it to play games on yet, I want to transfer all the data to my new slim before I use the fat one in anger.

Make sure the motherboard is flat in the oven, and dont move it for at least 20 mins while it cools.
