That's incredible, if it represents the reality rather than their vision. (No pun intended)
Agree. At least on the basis of that video, this is *way* more than a ‘VR headset’. Am genuinely interested and would buy version x once problems have been ironed out and price has dropped (awaiting accusations of ‘falling for it’ - only did that once, with the Newton, but arguably that became the iPhone).

If the headset does live up to the hype then in a couple of iterations once the price comes down I can see it being a success and even perhaps replacing smartphones (they may be relegated to the wrist).
Not a chance it will replace a phone.
You willing to wear what looks like ski goggles 16 hours a day ? What about the millions who wear prescription glasses ?
It will only take off if it's genuinely useful to the average person and I really don't see it

Yep. Hand free and 3D. Sponsored by Kleenex.

The headset cameras are likely good enough to record stereoscopic 3D vids, so there will likley be an 'explosion' of content when this thing comes out.

And the 80’s when Sony came up with a novel personal listening device…

Hopefully it goes the same way as Google Glass.
Quel dommage.

This is another Nokia when it needs to be the iPhone.
My first thought when I read the description was "Google Glass".

Maybe I'm not the intended market as I never played Pokemon Go, but AR has always been a solution looking for a problem in my experience. How many people have used the AR feature on Google Maps, on purpose, and thought "wow, that was useful"? The only time I've ever found AR was useful was when sight-seeing and thinking "what's that thing over there?". Fine to pull out a phone for 2 minutes, bit different to be walking around with £3k ski-goggles on with a battery pack dangling off it, especially if you are sight-seeing in a city with all manner of thievery afoot.

They'll sell loads though, and my Jobsophile mate will bang on about his so much that I fear this may well be the i-device that finally gets shoved up his arse.

I posted this in the Apple thread, so here's my thoughts:

First off, let me say that I can't ever see myself buying a VR headset thingy. It's just not my thing. Same as I have never even tried watching a 3D movie despite previously owning a Sony LED 3D TV which came with a couple of pairs of glasses which I never even took put of the packet.

Maybe I'll reconsider if these headsets eventually become the size of a pair of sunglasses and I can use them to watch a movie on a plane or something...

But that aside, I find the tech aspect of this sort of stuff mildly interesting, and with that in mind, I suppose you can usually trust Apple to sit back, watch everyone else make a half-arsed attempt at it, then bowl in at a later date with a massively more polished product, and it appears this Vision Pro is as expected.

I watched the Marques Brownlee video about his hands-on user experience of Vision Pro and he was impressed by much of it:

https://youtu.be/OFvXuyITwBI

Apparently the eye tracking and monitoring of hand gestures is absolutely insane. Described as 'magic' and 'almost telepathic' which amused me, but I know what he meant. It just shows how well it can actually be done, when done by someone like Apple.

The price is mental, but I suppose you have to bear in mind that this headset isn't just a display and sensors, it is an entire standalone computer with an M2 chip, running it's own OS.

VR/AR has never really become mainstream, the same as what happened to 3D TV's, but once you get someone like Apple pushing it, and working with major games and movie studios to produce content specifically for this sort of device, that will surely be good for all VR systems.

I guess the next generations of this product will likely include a cheaper 'non-Pro' model and also I guess they will try to include the battery pack into the headset itself at some point.

I don't think devices like this will be for everyone, but if anyone can make them significantly more popular with a better user experience, it will probably be Apple.

I have been a VR user since gen 1 Vive and have 100s of hrs if not 1000s in VR games.

I am going to stick my neck out and say this looks incredible. Its expensive, yep.

But.

It has eye tracking, hand tracking, 12ms refresh incl external cameras, on board GPU, 3d audio and a 3d camera. Its got LIDAR for gods sake! This thing is not far off a fighter pilots helmet!

I am sure more specs will come in time but from what I can see its basically got a fairly powerful laptop CPU inside the display itself.

Thats when the price starts to make sense to me. Its not just a display - its actually doing the donkey work so its going to be a stand alone device.

Price up a good quality VR headset and a PC that can run it. You are into £2k easily, probably a bit more.

On top of all that with it being a premium apple product its going to be well made. I dont own a single apple device, my mrs has an iPad pro but thats about it. If I had £4k burning a hole I would have one in a second!

have I missed something or is it just a Meta/occulus Quest Pro for twice the price?

I suspect its similar, but the specs on the vision pro look a lot higher especially the displays. I would have thought the CPU will be better than the snap dragon one too.

I think the thing with markets for this kind of tech is that they aren't created by affordable but disappointing products, they're created by the devices that people want but can't afford - people settle for a device they wouldn't have bought if the thing they really want didn't exist.

Interesting tech but not for me. Too pricey, battery life is poor, too heavy by the sounds of it, and doesn’t do anything I wouldn’t prefer to use my phone for - video calls, web browsing, taking photos etc. Apples demo with the dad as his kids birthday was really cringe. Gaming needs controller for maximum inputs and there are far cheaper headsets out there for that. I think MKBHDs point of no haptics is a significant one actually.

No one will take these out in public for AR experiences either, I would rather just use the thing in my pocket.

It’s not something I want to see fail, I just don’t see it kicking off. We will see.

I think my point is that is isn't the "game changer" they seem to be making it out to be, I would hope for the price, the spec would be better, regardless of standard Apple tax

Linus has just released his initial thoughts, and doesn't seem to the think price is that bad considering the fact this device is absolutely rammed with advanced tech:

Agreed.

As I mentioned above, I don't think VR/AR headsets will ever be totally mainstream, but if anyone can create the market, the demand, and the desirability for this sort of tech, it will be Apple.

I'm still curious as to the market for Vision Pro though. I'm guessing that most people who will want this sort of thing are likely to be gamers, but Apple isn't a big player in gaming. Plus, I suspect most gamers won't want to spend the $3500 on a VR headset.

I think it's all a bit odd but for me the appeal of having a huge monitor that otherwise would be impossible to fit on my desk would be very cool. Just not 3500 cool....

Nah, you want to splash out and get the Apple Vision 4 Pro

Genuinely fascinated to see what the next brief 3D gimmick will be after this lot is done.
