Give over, cash is the biggest faff of all.

A tenner? What about that horrible change stuff? I bloody well hate change!
Liking the idea, working, gym, swimming, kayaking etc.

Ideal.

I had a K Ring back before they went bust.

Was nothing more than a fix to a problem I didn't have. Yeah, all good to go to the pub and wave your hand over the card machine. But it had a prepay Mastercard that either got automatically topped up from the card of your choice or you could load it manually.

Handier than carrying a twenty pound note about with you for incidental purchases (and the pocket full of change). Do they have a £100 limit now for contact less? Because my K Ring was limited to £45.

so if we put our cards in an RFID proof wallet to avoid scams, why the hell would you want a payment ring or rfid implant?

Works OK, but if I get on the tube I can't just touch the card as before - have to get my phone out, unlock it, open the wallet app, select the right card to use etc.
My phone is set up to use my current account as default for contactless so I have to scroll through on screen to use my business card or another.

No idea how a ring would work unless you only want to pay from a single account.

Are there no shorter routes? iPhone had a double click of the side button and preferred card is there ready to go.
Add the card to ApplePay and then double click the right hand button to activate.
Why bother with any of that if using an iPhone (or Apple Watch) to pay?

Just set the card you want to pay with as an Express Travel card and then you just wave the phone (or the watch) over the reader and it takes the payment without needing to unlock the phone (or double clicking the side button on the Watch) - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT212171

And yes there is some security as not any old retailer is allowed to set their machines to be compatible with this so it doesn't impact paying normally.
That doesn't work for the vast majority of payment cards or credit/debit cards. It only works for dedicated travel cards, passes, or keys.

I just had a look in my Apple wallet and neither my Visa Debit or M&S Credit card can be set as an Express Card

Jeez I'm getting to old for all this.

Stop the world I want to get off.
You must be joking. Cash is a way bigger hassle and inconvenience than anything discussed in this thread.

For starters you have to physically travel to an ATM on a regular basis to acquire cash, and ATM's are becoming ever harder to find. Then you have to carry your cash around in a wallet, then when you do buy something with it, the transaction takes longer as the cashier has to fish around counting your change, then you spend the rest of the day walking round with a pocket full of coins.

The idea that in 2024 some people would walk around buying things by handing over lumps of metal and sheets of polymer is bonkers to me.

I've never owned an RFID-proof wallet. I would have zero worries about the security of a payment ring. Plus, as others have pointed out, the money doesn't just come out of your bank with a payment ring, it goes via a top-up system, making it actually more secure than having a Debit card in your pocket.

With my K Ring you had to make a physical downward tap movement. It wasn't just 'wave it vaguely in the direction' like a contactless card.

Our town used to have all of the major banks and a couple of building societies on it's High Street, all with ATMs, but over time they have all gone, we now have none, we've been debanked.

There's an ATM at the Morrisons, thankfully a short walk from the town centre, I got forty quid out a few weeks ago for something that required cash, first time I've used the stuff in yonks. It won't be long before cash is something one orders from Amazon for next day delivery.

Why go to the bother of implanting a chip - Just get a barcode tattoed on your forehead! So much more 'convenient' ...

As per a previous poster, I used to have a McClear ring, and really liked using it. As stated it was a bit of a faff having to transfer money to an account to use.. but not the end of the world.

What stopped me though was that like a regular card it expires. And so you then have to buy another one. As they weren't cheap, it turned out to be a turn off, I wasn't using it enough, and the thought of spending >£100 again just turned me off. Now use phone or watch instead, neither expire, and neither need me to transfer money to a separate account.

On the Android phones with Google wallet, simply set a default card in google wallet.

Then to pay, unlock phone, touch phone to contactless reader (without opening app), and voila, payment made without having to open the app at all.

I think Amazon have an Alexa Smart Ring out in the states, it's the sort of thing that Drunk Dave might be interested in.

The chip implant sounds a bit "Revelation-y."

I joined the crowd funding for this last year:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ring-one-the-mo...

It does health stuff as well as payment. - which was a bonus for me as I wanted a wearable fitness tracker that wasn't a watch as I still like to wear a 'real' watch.

Well... it will when it ships - it's 4 months late already.

Yes, similar to the iPhone, to pay with your main/default card you just double click the side button, look at the phone for Face ID to check you, and thats it. You don't need to touch the screen or select anything.

But the suggestion by another poster that you can set an 'express card' in the iPhone which can be used to pay without doing anything at all, doesn't seem to be correct from what I can see.

On your iPhone, go to Settings, Wallet and Apple Pay, and scroll down to see ‘Express Travel Card’. Pick one of the installed cards to use in Express Mode. I have 6 cards added to Apple Pay, and all are available for selection.

The text at the bottom of that screen says:
“You selected Express Travel card works automatically without requiring FaceID or your passcode. Just hold iPhone near a supported public transport reader.”

Same on Google wallet, but not necessary to set an express card apparently

Also Samsung will be releasing a Samsung Ring soon, which no doubt will support payments alongside fitness tracking etc

Ah great, thanks! Haven't tried it yet as haven't been on the Tube, but that looks like it has worked!

When I tried the Apple instructions of clicking on the three dots by the card there was no option for it.

Excellent smile

Still want an RFID ring though hehe
