Hi All.

Basil our 4 month old beagle had bee sleeping through in his crate with a 4 hour wee break mid way though the night. and usually surfacing about half 7 for breakfast and a walk.

However last weekend, (being bank holiday, and maybee having had a drink the night before) we fancied a lie in, so when he stirred in his crate, brought him up to our room where he settled at the end of the bed and afforded us a blissfull 2 hour lie in.

This past weekend, however, he has decided that after his half 3am wee break, he needs to be upstairs with us, and howls for about 30 mins after we put him in the crate. This is not ideal, and I am sure our neighbour thinks so too.

Clearly we have allowed him to think that he can sleep up with us, and this is not something I am keen to encourage long term. Other than ignore the howls, and not return to the crate unless he is quiet, has anyone got any experince of similar?

Oopsie...you've done it now. It's going to take peserverance and time and not give in again. As he is a beagle he will howl more persistantly than some but he should settle down.

It may be worth getting a DAP plug in diffuser. Plug it in near his crate and it should help to calm him. it may take a couple of days to have proper effecr.

I am sure there'll be some useful replies soon, I hope he settles soon.

Beat him, so he associates barking with pain!

We're in a similar sort of pickle, actually! But not because we've let her sleep in the bed... more because she's a noisy wotsit.

Same situation; 4 month pup (english bull terrier), wakes up at about 4am for a wee, surfaces for the day at about 7am...

However, if she wakes up more than the once in the night, she'll bark for a few minutes when put back in her crate after her wee.

And sometimes she'll howl when put back in the crate...

We think the barking is aimed at our other dog (in a bed at the side of the bed, which she can see from her crate), in some sort of protest at him.

The howling, though... well! Who knows!

We're confident she'll grow out of it, though.... but in the meantime, it's knowing what to do for the best, isn't it?

If she barks too much in the early morning, we simply move her into "her" room (once there's a break in the barking, obviously!), where all her toys are and another bed, so she can whinge and whine in there without waking the neighbours.

You can borrow our mantra if you like, with a small amendment:

"She'll grow out of it. She'll grow out of it."

'Cos they will, won't they?

Won't they?

Right?
