Looking for a new car, but the mileage of cars im looking at is cambelt territory, and i'd prefer chain.

is there a website or list anywhere which shows cars that are belt and cars that are chain? I was hoping Parkers might, but it doesnt seem to say.

Surely that's a perfect time to buy? If it hasn't been done (but is due) it's a useful negotiating point. If recently done it's a larger expense well out of the way.

As this is Pistonheads I assume we're not talking a 'White goods' purchase either...

Chains do snap and tensioners can fail. Personally, I can think of 100 more important factors to consider when choosing which car to buy.

Honest John normally makes a point of stating that on the car by car reviews.

good criteria on a bangernomics purchase.

A cambelt/WP/and tensioners change can be almost the purchase price of a bangernomics car.

yep you guessed it mt current banger is on a chain ;-)

one example of why this is not a good criteria is the vx220 which is chain cam. However earlier ones have a habit of going tits up due to the chain oil nozzle getting blocked so the chain that should last 100k pluse goes pop at about 50k.

Luckily mine is one of the later ones where this is not an issue.

Also giving a bit of trouble is the 1.3 JTD engine fitted in sone Fiats (including the 500), Suzuki, Ford and Vauxhall.

The company I work for supply the chain kits and the workshop tools to do this job, and they are flying off the shelves!
