As the title really, does my 1996 mk1 mondeo qualify for classic car insurance yet? If so, what do you reckon the difference in premium will be over normal insurance?

no way, i think you have to be at least 25 years old.

Classic insurance usually only covers second cars (at least, that was what it seemed when I was looking to keep the BMW and the MX5).

FWIW the few I asked were prepared to cover either, one being 19 years old, the other 21.

Is it a 2nd car that you cherish and pamper, garaged, only drive a few thousand miles a year in it, member of the Mondeo Mk 1 owners club, require agreed value rather than market value as it's likely to increase in value...? Or is your everyday hack and think you can pull a fast one?

I'm sure insurance companies have never considered that.

Yes, it's my second car, a rare variant (4x4 - only 31 left apparently), garaged and well looked after. I do approx 2000 miles a year in it and I am a member of a ford mondeo club as it uses a specific gearbox I needed details of once and the club were very helpful. It's very low milage, in better condition than almost every other mk1 I've seen and I don't really know its value as they hardly ever come up for sale and when they do, they're usually wrecks with 150k on them.

I was only asking the question as a couple of friends had suggested it might be old enough, but they may have been saying that a bit tongue-in-cheek, much like your "reply".

You should be able to get classic insurance
I have had my Brabus 190E 3.6 24v on classic insurance since it was 11 years old.
Some companies will do future classic policys when the car is 10 years old

Good on the OP. A MK1 Mondeo may not be everyones idea of a dream car to aspire to, but it would be an equally boring world if we all slavishly adhered to Ferrari, Porsche & there ilk. For my part, one day I will find a red 1988 E plate Pug 205 XS to replace the one I had when I was 18 - happy days.

Some companies will do a 'classic' policy for cars as young as 10. I must be boring aswell then because i like Mondeo's and still own my 99 zetec

I wonder how many people in the 80s said why keep a two door MK1 Escort.
Good ones are worth a lot now

I bet anybody who once had a 2 door Cortina and let it go cheap is now kicking themselves.

There sre fewer Mk1 Mondeos on the road than Morris Minors. Rare models like the factory RS (body kitted Si), ST24 and Si 4x4 do qualify for classic cover but your shopping trolly models will be hard pushed. Unless you join the Ford owners club and get insured via them perhaps.

Give it try. For the sake of a few phone calls it could be worth it. smile

My Rover 213S qualifies as a "classic" but because I use the old girl for commuting I have a standard fully comp' policy.

Ahh, the cream of the crop. Do you have the ford beige leather with contrasting black plastics and obligatory scratches? And a stereo with "Compact disc"?

biggrin

Aw God, really? I wrecked a 1995 Ghia 4X4 two years ago, I knew they were extremely rare - I never actually saw another, only one Si, but I thought it must be a couple of hundred left at least?

Ghia. From the days before Ghia X even existed wink

And for what it's worth on the topic, a lot of classic places now seem to say 15 years or, if it's interesting and lightly used, even less..

Does my 2010 Fiesta qualify as a classic? Clarkson said it was a future classic, and now its the future?
