Hello!

Woodburner going in next month, need to get up and get the stack sorted.
There is a joint stack between me and next door, total of 8 crown pots.

I don't think i would be able to afford a vent based on some of the other sites i've seen them on, and I need to cap the 3 off that I'm not using.

I'd quite like to leave the crowns up there for aesthetic reasons, is there any way I can block the top of the pot, with some form of bung, and then fit an airbrick in the stack at the base of the pot?

Trying to save myself wrestling the crown pot off the top!

Although the TP website demands that I send off a 'quote' (WTF?) - how expensive can a vent be and why must you cap off the other three?

Scroll down to flue ventilator... £101 each

3 aren't used and are becoming birds nest's. The property is already suffering damp, so i don't want to aggravate it

Brain,

How did you attach yours to the chimney?
Did you insert it into your existing pot? Did you cement it in or replace your pot all together?

Thanks

Something like this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270642062357?ssPageName=... Installed one a couple of weeks ago, stops the birds/rain getting down the chimney and still ventilates.

I've had these on for a couple of years,

It's not obvious they've been capped unless you look really closely.

Best ones are Mushroom Vents, look like the name says, fit into most existing chimney pots. Holes around the side to left the flue breathe, round cap over the top to keep the rain out, and nowhere for the birds to get in.

Fluvents are like flattened champagne corks with holes around the edge. Hood tops are OK, but only if you have an open base to the flue. The problem with them is that the birds shelter under the hood (looks like a short ridge tile) and fall down the flue. Hence you get soot etc all around the room, until the bird gets out, or you get the stench of dead bird if the bottom is blocked off.

None of the above should be used on live flues, unless you want to have dead room occupants.

Metal cowls are OK, but they corrode.
