We have a large fireplace in our kitchen which currently contains a solid fuel AGA, which is connected to a flue up the inside of the chimney.

Next job on our list is to refurb the kitchen and our intent is to add a conventional oven/hob next to the Aga (for which we would like an extractor fan). Ideally we would like to run this out through the same chimney in a separate flue. Can this be done (from a building regs and other safety requirements perspective)? My wife has just been told no - but would like to see what others think.

Also, in the back of the fireplace is a bread oven, which I would like to try using at some point. Clearly this will need some way to extract smoke up the chimney, would it make a difference if the extractor over the oven/hob were designed and described as an extractor for smoke from the bread oven?

Any insights appreciated. Also any tips to recommission the bread oven.

So no way to recommission the bread oven either on that basis? (While the AGA is flued up the chimney.)

as far as I am aware it would require its own flue.

If the Aga has it's own flue liner, then an extractor fan could surely use the same chimney if it again has it's own flue liner and separate chimney pots. So run close to each other but completely separate throughout. They couldn't share the same flue though.

I'd have also thought that it would have to be quite a strong extractor to extract up a chimney.

The bread oven would need it's own flue once again.

Could you extract the new oven out through a wall?

The AGA does have its own flue liner and a separate flue liner for the extractor was what I was proposing. You do have a point on the strength of the extractor - it would probably have to extract up about four metres of flue to get to the top of the chimney, and may therefore be unacceptably loud.

Possibly - but it's not that easy to do, as the nearest side of the inglenook/chimney wall is pretty thick (rough stone and lime mortar construction) and behind the oven/hob is the structure of the bread oven.

May have to investigate whether we can get through the side of the chimney, but not ideal.

It sounds like a recirculating extractor may be a better bet...
