Cat's eye cameras snap your plate

Could in-road speed cameras be on the way?

Could it be a camera?
Could it be a camera?
Could the days of the Gatso be numbered? In Malaysia, they're about to install speed cameras in road centre cat's-eyes.

Almost indistinguishable from a standard cat’s-eye, the tiny digital speed cameras will be near-invisible, and drivers will never know where they are installed. According to one report, a pair of the so-called intelligent studs sits between lanes, just 4mm proud of the road. One measures speed while another takes an infra-red picture of licence plates. The system works at speed of up to 150mph.

Coupled to a network and transmitted to police HQ, summonses will be issued automatically, according to Malaysia's New Straits Times. They use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) software and are self-cleaning -- much like ordinary cat's-eyes.

The Malaysian police justified the move by saying that the system frees up police for other tasks, and that they have their higher capacities.

The move comes on top of the recent launch of a Web site where the public can take pictures of traffic offences and post them on the Internet, as reported on PistonHeads last month. This then results in the offenders being issued with summonses (see story link below).

A version of the technology that's aimed at illuminating foggy roads has already been tested in Scotland and New Zealand.

It will definitely become a new sport. Those little cameras will need to be pretty damn tough to survive a continued onslaught of people deliberately driving over them.

In Malaysia, mind, they'll drive over them by accident. They have an "interesting" understanding of lane (in)discipline.

Oh yes: We'll get them here at some point, I'm sure. But it isn't time to get rid of the Griff just yet.

This country has thousands and thousands of miles of rural roads no-one cares about enough to put any form of speed camera on - let alone the plumbing necessary for these little bastards...

Exactly, damaging a big yellow box is "obvious", but how easy would it be to just spray one of these over discreetly, or better still, get a small hand held pick axe onto one.

Clearly after money more than ever with these, as they don't even act as a deterrent to speeding.

If no one knows there are camera's there, because the road is unsafe, then what will this do for road safety? NOTHING, the money grabbing scum.

So, this won't save police for other duties, as they are NOT doing the job the police did, act as a deterrent. All they will do is loose further public confidence in the system and police, and cause negative effects to overall road safety.

Ahhh, the money grabbing scum who deserve eternal pain and suffering in hell!
These will indirectly cause more road accidents and deaths through poor policing. It's terrible!

Found out about this a while ago. My neighbour is a consultant engineer for the company developing them. They are already on trial on a road in the UK. If my memory servs my well (probably not, it was about 3 months ago) it is the A38.

Be afraid, be Very afraid

Just remember that every time you go over a cats eye they are self cleaning, i would imagine it will be the same for this cats eye cam...

Also it would need a flash for night time. If does it have one maybe it is a low power flash because it works so close to the number plate.

I think also that with a Gatso we see it and slow down. Imagine if there were just signs saying these cameras were there and you didn't know where. How far would you drive before you though they were no longer there?

I am sure they are pretty tough but I am also pretty sure they would be reasonably distinguishable against normal cats eyes.

About the only use I can see is to catch people without tax/mot/insurance but then you really want plod there to stop them.

Anyway, it's www.nissanmircaslowbread.c....

Can they take a picture of your face from down there?

Agreed - it would be easy to remove these parasites from existence, once you've spotted one...

I foresee a rash of trips to the painter und decorating shop... und a "little accident mit the tin lid - officer -honest ... I had no idea it was leaking all over the lens in the hidden scamera as I was tootling down this road!" :laugh

Und lorries und big van straddling white lines to break them ... It will latest chav sport ..

Und we will all welcome those utility workmen who never put things back as they found them for change...

But seriously... ist nothing to do mit safety .. ist only ££££££££££££££££££££££ with this idea.
