VW Golf GTI (Mk7) | Spotted

Three-door GTIs are done, manuals go soon, then engines entirely - time to recall the (recent) glory days

A few spy shots have emerged recently showing what many are suggesting will be the final VW Golf GTI with an engine - a Mk8 facelift that signs off a legend in style before an all-electric ID Golf follows up for the ninth generation. While it isn’t clear yet exactly how the timeline will evolve over the coming years, progress is inevitable: already the three-door Golf GTI is gone, we’ve seen what a small EV GTI will look like, and a manual Mk8 GTI has been absent from the configurator for months now. It is unlikely to come back.

And why would it? Though it can be hard to concede sometimes, the Golf GTI that was (and remains) most popular with buyers is the five-door DSG - so that’s what VW made. Hardly a recent phenomenon, either; there are 200 Mk7 GTIs for sale on PH right now. Filter those results down to the three-door manuals, and you're left with just ten per cent.

Of those 20, three are the super special Clubsport S, one is a late Mk6, one has 145,000 miles… it’s very hard to track one down in the spec that ought to be most desirable to enthusiasts. We’re an even smaller portion of the buying public than might be predicted.

This one is especially interesting as a Performance-spec GTI, the option pack that introduced another 10hp, bigger brakes (marked out with red calipers), and the VAQ locking ‘diff’ that worked wonders for traction. It’s well worth seeking out if it’s a Golf GTI Mk7 you’re after, the best the model can be before getting into the more powerful, more expensive Clubsport models. The tartan upholstery gets a thumbs-up here, too.

Like so many ICE cars that are now nearing the end of their lives, it’s easy to remember certain cars more fondly when they’re gone. The Mk7 Golf GTI was never an outright thriller of a hot hatch, but it encapsulated what the genre should be about perhaps better than any other: fast, stylish, high quality and refined, but also proper fun to drive when the opportunity presented itself. It probably hasn’t been acknowledged widely enough that the Mk8 is a sharper steer, but as an overall package the Mk7 still takes some beating. It’s why we’re still so fond of them.

Though the black wheels and smoked lights of this one might not be ideal options, they’re easily addressed. Otherwise, the overall condition looks good; the interior needs a dust but nothing more, and the wheels only look to need to respray rather than a total refurb. A service history is promised, and its MOT runs until June - there hasn’t been an advisory in the past four tests. As a relatively recent but distinctly old school representation of the Golf GTI at its best, this looks a good’n. Take it from us, they’re not that easy to find.

I think the Mk7 and Mk8 both look better as a 5 door
Not sure that the end of the combustion engine is necessarily imminent , maybe just a hiatus for a while

Its not going anywhere for a long time as there are billions of them out there but nobody will be resurrecting them in the future once the issues with batteries are mitigated, I mean, what would be the point when you have something three times as efficient, will be like CRT TV's, Cassette Tapes and VCR's becoming mainstream again. We are in a changeover period.

As for the Golf GTI, they do appeal, maybe with a bit of a tune to release a bit more power, maybe not this mildly barried one, black wheels, three door and smoked lights give out a bit of the wrong vibe but its all the car most of us need really. My son had an R and was never all that into it, but weirdly, I find the technically inferior GTI more appealing for some reason, anyone else ? MK7 Golfs are nice, we have a 2013 diesel one and its quite pleasant to be in, well after my Fiesta anything is to be fair.

I ran a mk6 three door white GTI for a few years as a company car. It had the DSG box, and although it said 207 bhp it felt much quicker than the 2.5 ST it replaced. MK7 defo improved the interior and exterior and performance and with the obligatory remap you cant go wrong. This one does look like it will smell of weed though

Is the Audi TT not at least part of the reason that most Golf GTI's were five-door?

This car with silver wheels, non-smoked lights and not in white (for my preference anyway) would be a nice thing to run around in but once you've compromised on the doors it seems to make sense to go the whole way and get a TT with the same mechanicals

Having owned one, I can honestly say the MK7 GTI is possibly the greatest of them all as an all rounder.
To my eyes it looks more balanced as a 5 door, and I would always avoid a car with chav spec black wheels and smoked lights etc.

I do like a MK7 (and facelift 7.5) but you could've chosen one that had been cared for, rather than driven by some scrote that thinks black wheels and smoked lights looks cool.

3 door Performance Pack manual GTI - Perfect and the one to have if you can't afford a clubsport s. Surely it will be a car of it's era when the world has moved on and will be fine addition to anyone's collection.

Remove tinted lights, silver wheels and get it back to oem looking of course.

I'm nearly 4 years in with mine - no plans to change (although have made some small changes to it). Nerd/dad spec 5 door manual.

All MK7 GTIs have red calipers by the way; Performance pack does however have larger fronts with the "GTI" script. Rear gains vented discs.

It may as well come with Margot Robbie in the passenger seat but black wheels and smoked lights tell me all I need to know.

Mk 7 Golf is fantastic though - 5 door GTI Performance rather than the R is the sweet spot as people have said.

To be fair mate, if Margo Robbie was in the passenger seat id take it as a non runner with Chernobyl levels of radiation

Bit chavvy this one. Also not sure what the fixation is with a three door manual. A DSG five door suits the car better.

I really like these, particularly as a manual but not the above one in Bradford spec.

I’m pretty sure one of these is going to be my next car, ideally a 7.5. Finding a decent spec is a bit of a minefield though.

They've never been for me either as you say.

I've always generally had a soft spot for cars with 3 doors and 3 pedals(I really liked my manual F56 3dr Cooper S for example), so I find it a bit sad that both 3 doors and 3 pedals are virtually dead now really.

Had one of the very first Golf GTI Mk7s in red with 3 door and manual.

Absolutely fantastic car and loved mine.

Its breadth of ability was unmatched. It was ahead of its time for a 2013 car!

I drove it hard, pottered about in it, done long range drives, filled it to the brim moving house and even taught my wife to drive in it.

Mk7 Golf probably deserves to go down as the best Golf and best GTI of all time.

Didn’t look impressive on paper as it’s rivals but was the perfectly balanced car. I’d even say the pinnacle of an ICE family hatchback.

I like the GTi it is a classic but at the mileage shown the suspension and bushes will be soft the engine or may not be showing sines if wear, ditto gearbox. Seats and interior looks like it as held up pretty well. Much better to spen a bit more on a sub 50k miler the cost of upgrading and replacing will be significant

Definitely prefer a Gti as a 3 door, manual is a bonus. The heritage nod tartan seats are a no for me, would rather have a full black Recaro leather set. Ditch the chav boy tints and black wheels, replace with the Monza's , remap it , induction kit and a free flowing exhaust. That one is a bit too Maccie D's carpark for me though.

the exact spec of my car. MK7 GTI Performance, 3 door manual with 76k on the clock, in tornado red, a proper golf gti as it should be, I've had it five+ years and can't let go of it. I never felt the need to change anything, still standard wheels etc... has the DCC electric adjusting shocks too.
