BMW Concept Skytop leaks ahead of reveal

Silly name, spectacular looks for BMW's latest - is this a new 8 Series?

BMW likes to use the Villa D’Este concours to show off concepts which are really all about previewing production cars. There was an 8 Series that was basically the finished thing in 2017, a 2002 Homage that seems to have inspired the current M2, and a 3.0 CSL Hommage R that undoubtedly must have influenced the recent limited edition 3.0 CSL. We’re still waiting on a production Z4 shooting brake, but there’s clearly form. And at first glance, let’s hope this new Concept Skytop joins the Villa D’Este we're-about-to-build-it club.

Nobody’s meant to have seen the car yet, because the event doesn’t open until Friday - but as long as the internet exists stuff is going to leak. Taylor Swift wasn’t immune, so there’s no way BMW will be. Looks good though, right? Sort of like an 8 Series speedster, it brings back some welcome traditional design cues, with more of a shark nose (and fairly normal kidney grilles) than most BMWs of late; the rear evokes those super slim lights of the Z8. Coincidentally (or perhaps not) the old roadster takes pride of place on the Villa D’Este home page. Feels like this could be quite a big deal for the event and BMW.

Note as well the wheels that have hints of the old turbofan M5 rims, a recognisable (if lavishly reupholstered) BMW interior and ordinary mirrors; the Skytop isn’t a flight of fancy concept, or it would be more extreme. Something that looks like this is surely coming, and that has to be good news. What’s unclear for the moment is exactly how the roof works or what it is; the name (and look with the roof down) would imply a spider-style temporary arrangement, which would add some show debut glamour to a design that looks almost production-ready.

With nothing official yet from BMW (but not very long to wait), we can only speculate on what the Concept Skytop might become. A Z5 has been suggested by some sources, pushing the front-engined, rear-drive sports car a little further upmarket - as seems to be BMW’s way at the moment. Notably the interior features an off switch for the stop-start, so it’ll have an engine at least. Plenty about this says 8 Series, but with the M4 having become so fast and luxurious (and expensive), you have to wonder what future the big bruiser has. More to follow on the Skytop at the weekend.

Nice to see the design team who brought us the 3&4 series nostrils have been chucked in the Danube

Good to see that the BMW design team can still make a striking, elegant design while still having clearly identifiable BMW design features.

Which makes me wonder which team is responsible for the "challenging" beaver grilled iX / i3 / M3 / M4?

That looks lovely, the rear 3/4 treatment hides a lot of it's size if that is the same length as the current 8 series.

Strange to see a nice looking BMW. I'm sure if it ever makes production, someone at BMW Design department will ruin it.

Oooh that looks great. Classic BMW design, and not one of their recent monstrosities!

Will it make it to production though? I'm not sure

Looks boring. It's neither classic or in-your-face modern. Something KIA would make.

Rather attractive up until the B pillar.
Well done Bimmer.

Wow. That looks stunning. Really refreshing and like nothing else. Proportions and details look great IMO and a return to really great design. The only let down is the bejazzled gear know which looks a bit too blind and I think will age badly. The brogue stitching however looks great, ( in the way Audi baseball stitch did back at TT launch ). Would love to see this design language coming across the wider range..

Oh dear. Better fix that for production models.

I think it looks great! I'm not keen on the way the grill pinches out at the edge and I'm not entirely sold on the wheels either, but fundamentally a massive step in the right direction for BMW.

Can see a fair bit of evolution from the old F12 6-series in its proportions - obviously the detailing is very different!

Lazy styling, it’s just a pastiche of old 6 series and current 8 series. Not to be ageist but a 14 year old could do this…

Looks like a refreshed 6 series to me. I'll echo the goodwill around ditching the awful nostrils for a more restrained and classic look.

Agree. First "nice" BMW for about 15 years!

Quite a 70s/80s vibe about this. Nice to see we might have reached peak-grille with the current generation of BMWs!

Like that a lot. Back to. Classy look with a little menace.

I like it - and think it's way nicer than any of BMW's current offerings - but also this could be a concept car design from 25 years ago. Ah, actually maybe that's why I like it. biggrin

Perhaps BMW could hire that 14 year old, and let the current design team back to Kindergarten before story corner and naps.
