Hey folks, any Solar PV installer gurus on here? I recently has an installation done under a home energy grant, I took a look the other day at how the installed the brackets around the tiles. I have Sandtoft 2020 tiles, I would have expected them to notch them so they can fall flat? Before I go back to the installer to complain I wanted to know if this is actually acceptable from an MCS qualified installer?

Yes they should be notched otherwise the tiles will break

The fact you’ve got Sandtoft 20/20 tiles suggests your roof may be a very low pitch? In which case, yes you absolutely want the tiles to be sitting flat.

Actually the pitch is pretty standard at 35 degrees, we have interlock as it’s a windy position on the top of the hill.

Yes they should have been notched. The problem is all the panels will likely have to come off to do the job properly. Is the scaffold still up?

Unfortunately, we are seeing this more and more. I sent that pic to a Sandtoft rep, and he was also unsurprised.

Normally, a kit similar to this would be used, and the tile cut around.

Most solar installations now are ‘In roof’ and the tiles cut to suit, I’d like to see the wind uplift calcs on that install !

Oh dear, that will cost them, if you can get them back to sort it. Have you paid them?

It was installed under a grant so I did not pay them directly

Just to close this out the agreed in the end to use a special flashing for the tile mounts (from DEKS), just now waiting for them to come back and install.

I would not be happy with that solution tbh.

The proper job is cutting the tile and that is what I would want.

This is what they are proposing to use, this seems to be the most robust solution to me as no issues with the tile not sitting flat.

If it was mine I'd want the tiles notched. Not a difficult job with an angle grinder.

Is it all of them? The one lower down looks to be fine, which means the install is wonky?

Looking at the profile of those, I cant see how they will make them fit in your case, they may need to start again.

They don't look like they fit very flush, too bigger gaps.
